Well guys and gals, I've decided I'm wanting to start doing something that I've wanted to do most of my life... Prepare yourself now. I'm wanting to get into blacksmithing. I'm already trying to get to work on a forge in my backyard. I'm sure it will be hard at times when I'm too sick to do it, but it's just something I've always wanted to do, and I thought I'd share with you guys.

If you feel able to do it-----go for it!!!

Definitely go for it, if that is what you really want to do.  Being self employed is a great way to make a living when you've got a health condition and need to take things at your own pace.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate it. It's just going to be a hobby though. I wouldn't want to make it a career because I'm just learning and because I will probably have bad days where I can't do it.

Go for it! Lots of great artwork is done by blacksmithing! Let the creative juices flow! Have fun and maybe can post a link to pictures on day!

ttdub-Do it.  Too bad you don't live near us as that is something my husband would love to do.  He always has to be working on something or he isn't satisfied.  It is going to be a lost art and I think you will have a lot of fun and things to learn.  You might even advertise for a blacksmith near you to sort of be a mentor.  Lucy

I don't know much about blacksmithing other than they used to make horsehsoes...don't know if they still do?  What sort of thing will you make?

Hi Ttdub  :)

If you can physically do it - go for it. It's always looked pretty exhausing to me but I certainly like the results people get!! I was a potter once but I know I physically could not do that now. I love craft work.

Take care - Scottie  :)

ttdub,

I'll add my "Go for it!"   :D ;)That sounds wonderful.  Anything you can do to be creative is awesome.  You may just need to post some of your work for us.

Thank you so much everyone! I really do appreciate it. And scottie, you can do it. The way I look at it is that, even if I can only do it for 30 minutes at a time, it will eventually get done.

And to answer someone else's question, I want to eventually be able to make a Japanese Katana the old fashioned way (without monosteel).

Pisces24

Yeah!  Go for it.

By the way: I don't know much about blacksmithing but there are "places" around that make yard art out of copper, etc.  You might be able to make a little money on the side with that as the art is pricey but seems to sell well.
