Strange smell

For the last six or so months, I've been smelling cigarette smoke.  Thing is, this is a smoke free home.  It's not chimney smoke, no chimney and the chimneys around here are downwind of us.  Not the same smell.

I smell cigarette smoke and it's driving me crazy.  Anyone else have this problem?

No but any development of strange smells needs to be investigated, I know my friend could smell a burning type of smell and went to her doctor and it turned out to be a brain issue now although that sounds dramatic, it wasnt (pituitary problem) and was easily treated.

Her doctor said she was right to get it investigated.

Sorry I can't be of much help. I have trouble smelling much of anything these days, I am always either stuffy or super dry. Not sure if my sense of smell is intact anymore!

Cigarrette smoke is so yucky, I bet that is driving you nuts. Are you getting the burning nose and eyes that usually come with smelling smoke?

I agree, mention to your doctor.

Take care!!

I don't know how long you've lived there, but the previous owners/renters could have been smokers.  I used to work in property mgmt for apartments prior to SjS and disability and can tell you that cig smoke can permeate the walls, floors, ceilings, etc.  Painting over it will help to disguise it, but homes that had heavy smokers can still smell it even a years later.

If this is the case with why you smell it, sadly there is not much to do other than seal/paint again to try and cover it up.  Carpet is a sponge for cig smoke and steam cleaning doesn't remove it all...replacing it is the only option.

Hopefully your nose is play some "temporary" tricks on you and it will clear up soon.  There are conditions where the sense of smell is affected.

I sometimes smell phantom odors. I think we had a thread about this not too long ago?

Found it!  https://sjogrensworld.org/index.php?topic=17233.0

- Could be phantom smells.  I get them all the time now.  My last phantom smell ... for a whole day I smelled root beer float with vanilla ice cream.  I haven't had one in years, but that's what I smelled.

- Could be SPOOKS.   You could have a ghost around.  Seriously.  Try some EVP work ... You never know, you could have a smoking ghost ..

I don't have a pituitary problem.  Had that checked already.  The house is not the source of the smell.  Hubby and visitors don't smell anything.

Liz, that would be so cool if it were a smoking ghost!  I could at least ask him (or her) to switch to cherry tobacco.  I like that smell.   :)

After I posted the original last night, I went googling this morning and found that this is a problem with a lot of people.  It comes and goes (and no, no burning sensation in the eyes and/or nose) and for some, is just driving them insane.  Mine just started like back in September (maybe).  It's just so bizarre.

Yes, Nara,

It is sort of like smelling cigarette smoke, but more like 'tasting' it, if that makes any sense.

It often happens when I have coffee or tea.

Go figure.

Keep us posted.

It makes perfect sense Elaine bit that's not it either.  It's in my nose.  I can SMELL it.  It's the weirdest thing.  And it's only every now and then.  I'll bring it up to my rheumy when I see her later this month.   :o

I often smell body odor type of smell.  It isn't real.  Others don't seem to smell it.  I keep thinking it is me that smells so foul.  I keep trying to blow my dry nose to clear it up but it doesn't work.

My husband smokes so I always smell that smell.  Blah.
