Woke up this morning and felt like I had been thumped in the face!  My gums at the back of my mouth - both sides- ached and when I put my teeth together it was quite uncomfortable.  What's this all about I wonder?  Any ideas welcome.   Thnks

Is it an infection that you should see your doctor about so you can get antibiotics?

Could be a virus, I experienced exactly the same recently, was over it in a few days, there is a virus going around that causes this but you might want to go to yor doc just in case.

I have still got the pain - can't get dentist appointment for three weeks.   The pain comes and goes and it is more a bruised feeling than a pain. Will see what the dentist has to say.  thanks for your help.

I wonder if you might have a canker sore back there???   :P

Hi smileandbehappy,

Yep, often my teeth hurt from one end of the mouth to the other or sometimes just in one tooth or even a few...there is no rhyme nor reason for this (Lyrica sure does help, but it doesn't always take away the pain of chewing; the dentist has no answers either).

Still getting it.  I don't think its a canker sore as I can't feel anything.  It just throbs from time to time with a dull ache (most of the time) in the gums at the back.  When it gets quite bad I have been rinsing my mouth with salt water and taking paracetamol.  I'm going to stay at friends this weekend so I'm taking clove oil with me as well!  I've never had anything like this before but I seem to be having a few different things happening lately.

No I haven't been to docs.  I keep putting it off cos I live in France and have to go to doc with my hubby regularly and find it trying keep talking in French.  His doctor is a different one to mine.  His sits in the morning, mine sits in the afternoon. Its too far to keep going backwards and forwards.   Can't change to the same doc cos his doc specialises in certain things.  Oh, the excuses are endless.  I'm going with hubby on Monday so perhaps I can pluck up the courage to mention it to his doc and see what he says.

Could you be stressed and are clenching your teeth at night? It is called bruxism. I do this and have to wear a mouth guard at night to protect my teeth. I don't grind them..I just clench them.

My symptoms were jaw pain/jaw fatigue, back molars hurt especially with chewing and were sensitive.

just a thought..what ever it is I hope you get to the bottom of it and it stops.

I know you are your weekend now, and hope you are having a good time. There is a trick I know that *might* help relieve the pain in the back of your mouth. It is this:

When you go to sleep at night, after you turn off the lights, fold your tongue up to the roof of your mouth and keep it there while you fall asleep. Do the same thing every time you wake up briefly during the night. Also you can do it when alone and sitting and reading -- any time you won't be talking.

How it works? It shifts the alignment of your mouth and jaws, so that pressures at various spots and sore muscles get relief -- I think.

Much success,
