Hi all,

I have had been diagnosed with SJS for a little over a year, am 31, and have been on Plaquenil and Neurontin. I have a question for other SJS sufferers. Is falling a common problem with Sjogren's? About a month ago, I had a hard fall in front of a grocery store walking on uneven ground. I twisted my ankle several times since over uneven ground and learned I have a torn ligament in my ankle and a fracture and dislocation in my wrist. My current rheumatologist thinks that this is unrelated to Sjogren's but I am starting to think he's wrong. Any other people have problems with falling?

I would also be interested to know who has problems with falling. I've fallen a couple of times this past year, and here at work one of the guys calls me "Tripper" because I'm always spazzing out if I try to walk too fast.

really?

Do you have neuropathy,, pins and needles?,, I fall, sometimes a few times a day,, sometimes not for a few days,, for me,, its like the legs just stop working,, not that they dont hurt all the time,, they do,, but sometimes they just give out, same with the hands,, For the most part,, thre constantly burning, or feel freezing, wife said they were freeznig this morning,, still are, i dont htink its reynauds,, no color change,, just get ice cold,, and I dont htink its a anxiety issue,, there just cold, and numb,, or burning,, I still have a idea that a lot ofit is coming from my cervical spine,, everything seems ok till I get up,, then it all starts, but they say no,,

the only way to find out what it is,, is to have NCStudies done,, EMG study and if that all comes back normal,, demand a punch biopsy,, it will show if there is small fiber neuropathy going on,, so many times I was dismissed, only to have something bear fruit when I demanded it be done,, we know,, we know when something is horrible wrong

No neuropathy, I'm just walking along when suddenly WHUMP! I'm on the floor in a heap. Sometimes I tip over, sometimes my foot just goes shwoooop! out in front of me like an iceskate, sometimes it feels like my shoe has come to a complete stop right in mid-stride, and down I go.

It only hurts my pride. And my clothing.

Hi Leslie,
My legs just feel wobbly sometimes then my joints in my knees and ankles just buckle for no reason, kind of suddenly. I thought it might be related to the joint issues of sjs. It makes me nervous going downstairs or down hills.

I've always been what my mum calls 'gormless'. I can fall over my own feet. Recently, I think I've become more unsteady, particularly when standing up, or judging distance. I'm not dizzy, and don't have low BP - in fact, quite the opposite. I think it is part of the SJS.

I have taken several bad falls in the past few years.  One was on concrete and I fell on my face breaking my nose and blacking both eyes, my glasses pushed into my face and broke.

I fell in a public restroom  (oh great).  This was a little different as I was walking towards a stall I think my leading leg gave out and as I reached for the door, down I went face into the side of the stall.

I do believe this is connected to SJS and in my case, I have neuropathy problems in my legs and also have one knee replacement and am scheduled for another Nov. 2.

I had a lot of falling and TIA's brought on by Neurontin. When I stopped Neurontin the TIA's stopped and so did most of the falling.

I get dizzy and I loose my balance real easy. Not had any bad falls yet. But come close. I usually am able to grab something to keep me from going down. I wasn't sure if it was sjogrens related. It could be due to my ear and sinus problems that are from the SS.

Hi Lesliec,

I'm not in the medical field so I can't say wether falls are more common to SJS or to a neuro issue, but I sure know what you mean (would love to know why some of us have this problem).

I'm another one that falls occasionally, and thankfully have only been injured once (embarrassed a lot, but mostly not hurt).  I'll be walking normally and then suddenly won't feel one of my legs and down I go (or into a wall  :o).

I sure hope that your torn ligament and fractured/dislocated wrist get better soon.

Take care of yourself and don't forget to keep us updated, okay?
