Pinky Finger

Ugh! For about a week I have been having really bad pain in the pinky. It's not the joint, it feels like the bone between the joints, just above the base. It's very very sharp stop me in my tracks can't move pain.

Raise your hand if you this happens to you!

Jen, Any type of sensation in your middle finger?  I have my little finger and middle one lock up and have to take other hand and work the feeling back in the two fingers.

Ortho doc says it is nerve related...which I agree with as PN is in feet, too!

Today I was having some pain in the middle finger, but not as bad as the pinky gets. I'm not sure if it's related or not. My Neurologist said I don't have PN, but my Rheumy and Gastro think I do. I'm going to go to another Neuro just to see what he says. I hear he's really good and closer to my house!

Sometimes I get a constant pain in the pinky as well.  My Rheumy tells me that I am pressing down on my elbow too much and that is caused (at least in my case) by irritation/compression to the Ulnar nerve that runs from the elbow to the pinky.

You wish to see if you are leaning on your elbow alot or keeping it bent alot.  This can even happen when you sleep.  You can try wrapping a towel around the elbow joint to keep it straight at night or wearing an elbow brace backwards at night.  If the pain gets out of control, surgical intervention may be an option.

Hey Daisy! Is your pain a really sharp pain that feels like it is in the bone? I have the pain and tingle from my nerves mostly in my left hand. This seems to be different.

Flutterfly! I looked at the links and that doesn't sound right, but from the last link I can tell you the pain is in the proximal phalanx. Don't I sound smart now! I guess I'll have to check with the Rheumy on Tuesday when I go. It's supposed to be to look over the results of my hand and elbow MRI. It was never done. I called her office more then once to inform them that they had not set it up yet. I guess they don't care. I will be having a talk with her on Tuesday about her staff. In the mean time I can mention my strange night, pinky and a few other things. Oh yeah, she never called me about my blood work that she said we had to go over. According to her it was important. I guess she forgot.

Jen, I attribute finger pain from carpal tunnel nerve impingement as it come through tunnel in wrists.

Do you use your wrists allot, such as daily in repetitive motions?  Joy

I had this 2 years ago. It was my ulnar nerve and trigger finger. I had ulnar never transposition surgery but still had pain in pinky finger. My therapist found a not above my finger it is from the tendon being inflamed. I tried therapy for a month with little help. Then had trigger finger release. I still get pain if I over use.
The pinky finger and half the ring finger are controlled by ulnar nerve. Thumb,index,middle and half ring are controlled by the carpral nerve. I wonder how common this is with sjogrens.

My pain was a sharp stabbing pain that was constant.  It also made my fingers and between my ring finger and pinky go numb and tingly.  I basically couldn't use that part of my hand at all.

I think you're so right in talking to your Rheumy about it as soon as you can.  My Rheumy is the same as yours, orders blood work for various "important" things and maybe if I'm lucky I get a call back in a few months.  I also had a Bone scan done of my SI joints and it showed moderate to severe inflammation and they never ever called to tell me about it or to recommend that I get some cortizone shots to help.  Thank goodness my family doctor was on the ball!

Hi Jen,

Sounds almost like something I had in my pinky finger years ago.  Felt like I banged my finger against the wall and it was red and inflammed and very hot for a couple of weeks.  Turns out I had synovitis which is inflammation in the synovial fluid (the fluid which is the lining of the joints).  Really hurt bad, I really thought I broke my finger it hurt so bad but knew I didnt' because... well... you would know if you broke your finger.  Now my upper joint of my pinky finger looks like a bit bigger joint in my pinky finger than my other one.  I did start feeling the pain in my ring finger in the same hand but it was of a lesser extent.
