Ewwwww-Did anyone ever have a toenail fall off?

I was trimming my toenails and noticed the little toenail on one (little) toe was standing straight up.  I've always had weird small toe-nails.  Only on the little toes.  They are curved like a small u and are very thick and hard.  They really aren't big at all, but hard to cut.  Well, this bugger is standing straight up looking at me.

I'm thinking I'll go to bed and it'll get caught in the covers and come all the way off.  All it needs is a nudge.  Rather than have it standing 1/4 inch in my face, I decided to clip it so now it's 1/8th inch straight up waiting to be knocked off or just fall off.  Oh, I am so grossed out by this.  Not because it's ugly or anything but having a nail fall off is not funny.  They might all fall off, or my fingernails too.  I will put a bandaid over that toe and a sock on when I go to bed.  I don't know if I wish it would fall all the way off--or not.  Lucy

Both my lil piggies have had that happen. They grew back funny. My right has a hard cover but no nail. My left has thick hard nail that comes off occasionally and then grows back.

None of my other toes are affected.

Hope you get to the bottom of it...let me know if ya do!;)

Had that happen with a thumb nail and a middle finger nail.
Both eventually grew back .. but wavy and funny looking.
Had to keep it covered as it did.  YOUCH!

Hi Lucy, Sha, and LizP,

The next smallest toe nail is now in the process of falling off.  Doesn't hurt much, but sure looks odd!

Ack, it always seems to be something or other....

Are we susceptible to losing toenails/fingernails?  I was born with the tiny little toenails.  They don't look funny or anything really as no one ever gets close enough unless i have a pedicure.  I do this maybe 2-3 times a year and had my first one just over the last few years..

If I was born like this, why at mid-60's did this thing decide to fall off.  I should say stand straight up as in a 90 degree angle to my toe.  Yuck.  It does not hurt, but I have had a sock on it all night and all day.  I don't know whether to try to pull it off or not.  I am seeing my GP in a day or so and I'll wait and have him look at it and he'll probably rip it off.  I would rather it be on OR off and not at a 90 degree angle.
