Moving Day

G'day all.  Today my stress levels will be tested to the max.  Its moving day.    I am moving from the West coast to the mid west.   The movers are here and starting their work.  The first thing the drivers say to me is that, "I think they under estimated your load weight" ($$$$$) Wonderful.   I can't wait to see what will happen next. 

The wife and I have been preparing for this move since June.  After 4 yard sales, hours of packing, many trips to the dump, several trips to the Goodwill and a massive give away.  Things that are left will start leaving the house.

Once all our treasures (junk) are gone, then comes the fun of painting, cleaning, repair, talking to Realtors and the drive across country.  Well I've always said, each day is an adventure waiting to happen.  I think after this I can hold off on the adventures for a little while.

Moving, day is still happening.  So far the damage is, one completely destroyed stereo cabinet, one glass shelf out of my wife's china hutch, several boxes that fell apart and my last nerve is ready to desert me.  Ain't moving fun?

Hang in there, moving is tough.  Are you looking forward to living in the Midwest?  Take one day at a time and eventually it will all get done.

I feel your pain.  I am moving this week.  My last day on the job is Friday and I start my new job Monday.  I have been packing, but tonight I just gave up.  I am in the mid-west and only moving about 120 miles.  I will be HR Director at a small hospital.  I am excited but I want the move to be over!  My hands hurt.

Enjoy the midwest.  It really is a great place to live.

Williak, good luck on the new job. Kim, since I lived on the west coast most of my life, I am excited about the move.  I am sorry to leave, but life go's on. 

The movers are still here.  I had a lot more stuff than I realized.  If I knew then what I know now, my wife and I would have thinned things down a lot more.  As it is many boxes will not be going on the truck.  I am already at my weight limit.  The space used in the truck is more than I had planned also. 

This is a trap that moving companies love people to fall into.  They will go over what you are going to be moving.  Give you a weight estimate, (usually you under estimate.).  They give you a fantastic price.  Then when you discover you made a big mistake, it's to late your stuck with what you get. 

My mistake was I did everything over the phone.  If you are going to use a moving company, get them to come out to your home and do a walk through.  Then discuss the price.  If you do go over weight make sure it's covered in the contract.   

As a moving gift, it has now started raining.  I just came down with a cold.  Now the driver came in and said that I will definitely need to rent more storage space at the other end.   ;)Well the adventure continues. 

If you are planning to move, take my advice, start planning at least a year in advance. Or don't move at all.

I was born and raised in New York but have been a Hoosier for 28 years.  I miss the hills in NY but not the taxes!

Thank you Nans,  I understand what you mean about the taxes.  In my state, The Governor wants us to vote in a state income tax for the rich.  It sounds good on the surface.  What they don't tell you is that, in two years the state senate can extend that tax to every one. 

The movers have finally departed.  Now I am left with the mess.  On Friday I should know what my over weight costs will be.  By then I will have rented the second storage space.  Its a never ending drama and I play a staring role.  Oh well, this is an adventure and a learning experience.

Seeker - what part of the Midwest are you coming to?  (Just in case I see a moving truck - I'll know it's you.   )

Sorry to hear that this move is more involved than you anticipated.  I've never done a moving truck move . . when I moved here to Central IL from Ohio I just packed what would fit in my car.  I still have some bigger furniture items at my Dads house in OH (after 18-1/2 yrs . . . doubt I'll ever get them over here).

I've seen some people around here rent those storage Pods - you fill them up, they come pick them up and store them for you and then move them to wherever you want them.

Indiana will be my new home.  My wife's from there, so I will not be totally alone.  I think the movers was a good idea.  It was nice to have some one else do the heavy lifting.  I just wish I would have done my home work a little more.

Hey!  So you will become a Hoosier too!

I am located in the Kokomo area.  If that's where you'll be, you will have to look elsewhere to find a rheumy... the only one in Kokomo is not taking new patients.

Howdy Nans, I will be in the Indianapolis area.  If all go's well.  It will take awhile be for I consider myself a Hoosier.

Today I am totally wiped out.  Yesterday was an interesting adventure.  One I do not want to live through again any time soon.  Anyway I am done out and done in.

seeker, Well, I would guess that you are about ready to drive away from your old life and enter the new one. You will be in the medwest where life is slower but still with problems---mostly because of politicians, all of them, the whole kit and kaboodle!!!!

We moved long distance 4 times and the one time the big van showed up with only the driver. I still shake my head when I think of it. Not one soul to help the driver load except my hubby. Plus it was cold and rainy---and the van was very late. So hubby helped the driver and they loaded all day and got soaked. When everything was loaded we stayed in the house and slept in sleeping bags on the floor. AT least it was warm. That was not a good move!!!!

Hope your trip goes well. Do you have housing lined up or do you have to find it when you get there??? It is exciting to move but it is work to say the least. I don't think I could do it again. Irish
