Colostrum equals immune modulator

Hello everyone, just wanted to drop in today to mention something that I tried about 12 years ago that I think was working to slow down whatever autoimmune disease/diseases I have.  When I first became sick, I was doing tons of research about the immune system because at first the only diagnosis I was getting was Chronic fatigue syndrome along with Fibromyalgia. Well along my research journey I found info on Bovine Colustrum being beneficial as an Immune system modulator...I thought what the heck and ordered some online and started taking it.  Now since I was new at being sick and didn't realize how sick I was going to get eventually, I don't think I truly appreciated the full affect of how it must have been helping me.  As I sit here typing, I am thinking that maybe it was helping me by controlling inflammation and maybe slowing things down from progressing?  It seems as if that when I stopped taking the Colostrum, tons of vitamin C/zinc, and for a short time colloidal silver, that everything started to progress.  Today, I searched Colustrum again and am thinking I just may attempt taking it again?  Has anybody heard of this or tried it before?  I actually think that my random attempts at feeling better with something that at the time was new and a little off the wall may have extended the time I had before the hard hitting symptoms came about.    If you want to read about Bovine Colostrum just google it and lots of stuff will pop up.  Let me know what you think about it.  Thanks Mary

Here is just a sampling of what is being said about Colostrum benefits:

Colostrum is a special fluid secreted by the mammary glands of all mammals near the time of birthing. Its purpose is to promote good health in the newborn. Colostrum works for adults as well as infants. Colostrum for human use is harvested from dairy cattle after the calves have been given an amount adequate for their needs. Colostrum has been shown to substantially benefit persons with lupus.

The Science

"PRP from colostrum can work as a regulatory substance of the thymus gland. It has been demonstrated to improve or eliminate symptomatology of both allergies and autoimmune diseases (MS, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, myasthenia gravis). PRP inhibits the overproduction of lymphocytes and T-cells and reduces the major symptoms of allergies and autoimmune disease: pain, swelling and inflammation." --Dr. Zoltan Rona, The American Journal of Natural Medicine, March 1998.

"The ability to stimulate or suppress the immune response is highly significant. Suppressing the immune system is necessary to prevent the immune system from attacking the body itself, as in the case of autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, MS, Alzheimer's disease and allergies. Colostrum's suppressive action may help prevent this type of activity involved in autoimmune diseases." --Beth Ley, PhD Nutrition

"Colostrum contains a special Proline-Rich-Polypeptide (PRP) that serves as a powerful regulator of the immune system. PRP in colostrum increases the permeability of the skin vessels, which offers a regulatory activity, stimulating or suppressing the immune response." (Staroscik)

Hello Sleeeeepy:

Thanks so much for this posting.

I totally believe in immuno- modulation - to regulate and normalize the immune system.

I have heard of PRP, don't know how well it does for Sjogren's.  For example, does it slow down the ulcerations, progression of the disease or does it actually treat the dry eye, dry mouth symptoms that most of us have.

Are you going to try again?

Here is the result of one study I found....there are others...just don't have time right now to look..I will look again later.

Background: Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been proven to be very effective on tissue regeneration and wound healing. Here we investigate the potential use of PRP in the treatment of symptomatic dry eye. Methods: Eighteen consecutive patients with symptomatic dry eye were treated with topical PRP and followed up for 1 month. Disappearance of subjective symptoms, increase in best corrected visual acuity, tear meniscus, tear breakup time, decrease in inflammation, fluorescein staining and improvement in impression cytology were measured. Results: Symptoms improved significantly in 89% of the patients, 28% improved at least 1 line of best corrected visual acuity. A significant improvement on lachrymal meniscus and conjunctival hyperemia and a decrease or disappearance of corneal fluorescein staining were observed. Impression cytology revealed a significant increase in conjunctival goblet cells. Conclusion: Treatment of patients suffering from significant dry eye symptoms with autologous RPR proved to be very effective, improving both patient symptoms and major clinical signs.

Yes, I think I might try taking it again to see what happens......Take care.....Mary

Please note that the colostrum provides Proline-Rich-Polypeptide (PRP) while the study quoted was on Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) ...two totally different substances.

Wow, so the platelet rich plasma is also beneficial it appears. Funny all the stuff you can find while only trying to search one thing.   Thanks...mary
