Hi everyone,
I have had a very bad 3 days, so bad that I kept one of my kids home from school today in hopes of getting me out of my slump!!!! I may not be all the way out, but it helped.  I had another appointment today, only eye doc this time.  On the way to the appt. my 10 y/o was in the van with me and I decided to finally tell him a little of what is going on with me, the new diagnosis of Sjogrens.  I explained only what I felt he could handle.  I told him that they are going to put me on some new medication and there may be some side effects.  Well, he said like the one that made your hair grow really long?    I laughed so hard.   The story......About 5 years ago my husband and I went on our 2nd honeymoon to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.  I have EXTREMELY curly/frizzy hair and didn't want to spend our entire vacation with pub*c hair on my head!!!! So, i made an appointment to get hair extensions put in.  But.....my hubby and i are huge practical jokers, so we "prepped" the kids for weeks on how the doctors wanted to try me on a new medicine, but it may make hair grow anywhere on my body, literally overnight!!!!!  Rememer, we did talked about this for weeks!!!! So, the day before my appointment we sat down for dinner and told them that I would be starting the new medication tonight.  They all went to school the next day and i went to get my hair extensions put in!!!! ;) :D

I went from hair just above my shoulders to hair below the middle of my back---and straight!!!  They came home and when they walked in the front door they said "Oh my God, your hair!"  I immediately started "crying" and said "don't even, I have had to shave my face twice already!" and stormed off.  I came out later and they were all trying to avoid looking at me.  Gradually over teh next few weeks, they became used to seeing me in long hair.  The 2 older boys believed this "hormone" medication story for about 2 months and the 5 year old we finally told this summer (he is 10 now)

I guess the whole point of this story is, to appreciate the little things in life.  Nothing has changed with me since I was "diagnosed" 2 weeks ago, I am the same person I was and have been, there is just a name for it now!!!!!  For all of you who are newly diagnosed remember that.  SJS does not define who we are it gives us an answer and insight to learn how to deal with all the "crap" it puts in our path!!!!

Hi saranski   :)

You are SO right. (Cute story too) When I got a Sjogren's dx over 5 years ago now I felt pretty shell shocked - and angry - as I'd been dismissed by various doctors for about 20 years.

I couldn't understand why I felt tearful. I felt I should be glad I finally had a dx. I had validation. That had to be better than before.

I came to the same conclusion as you. The name actually changed nothing. This was something I'd been dealing with for a lot of my life. Finally I was possibly going to get some help but I was the same, life was the same and life is for living - right?

Take care - Scottie  :)

Cute story Sarah.

I totally agree that SjS doesn't define who we are - but, it does give us a name for all these wonderful gifts we keep receiving.  It's just not fair there are no return receipts included!!   ::)
