Assessible Travel Tips?

Seems travel is a theme this week!  But I wanted to ask specifically if anyone had any suggestions on wheelchair accessible travel.

I'm flying to Portland in about 10 days to go to a game design conference!  I'm soooo excited to see all my friends from that realm of my life.  This will be my first time going anywhere in a wheelchair.  I'm especially nervous about the plane.  My hotel room I reserved at least is wheelchair accessible.  I still have to arrange transportation from the airport to the hotel and back again.

Any suggestions?

Hi Lauren,

Sounds like fun!  Does the hotel have a handicapped accessible van that they can pick you up from the airport?  I don't know about Portland but here in Houston, we have what is called "Metrolift" and its a public transportation for people with disabilities.  They will take you door to door and it may be a few stops along the way to pick up or drop off other passengers.

I'm posting the link to my area's just to give you an idea... remember this is for Houston, I would call the city of Portland to find out if they have something similar.

If the hotel is large enough to have a concierge desk simply call the hotel and ask for concierge and tell them your issue.  They are there to resolve those kinds of problems.    If there is no concierge desk then just ask for the front desk.    Also,   this person has some good traveling tips.....see link....

Thanks!  I'm going to try the concierge first.  Then move to outside resources if necessary.  Thanks for the suggestions!  I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for all the tips!  I got everything all sorted out and am about to go to bed and catch a few hours sleep before I get up to leave for the airport in the morning!  I am so excited!

The downside is I have double ear canal infections and an infected thumb.  Yay for immunosuppresants right?  LOL

NOTHING is keeping me from enjoying this trip though!  I will let you how it went when I get back on Monday!
