Swollen ankles

Hi

The week before last I noticed puffy bits under my 'outside' ankle bones. The puffiness went down a bit if I elevated my feet but now it just seems to be there all the time.

Tonight I noticed the tops of both feet were a bit puffy as well.

I haven't put on any extra weight recently and it's not bad swelling - pretty minor really. No pain. Should I bother mentioning it or not?

Scottie, if I were you I would mention it. It sounds like fluid is pooling there and I think you should run it by your Doc. Is anywhere else puffy? Like your hands? I have to watch my salt intake because I retain water - worse at certain times of the month. Take care!!

scottie, If it was me I would head to the doctors office. If I remember correctly you are a possible sjogrens/lupus cross. Seems only prudent to get the testing done. Might just be what you are eating, new medication or the weather. Keep us updated. Irish

Scottie, I would definately bring it up with the doctor and see what he/she thinks.  Hopefully its nothing serious:)  Since Irish brought up that you are a sjogrens/lupus cross, I need to ask you.  Do you ever have fevers that last all day with really bad pain?

I'm with the others, I would mention it to the docs as it might be heralding something acting up or even something new.  And I'll keep the digits crossed that it's just the weather or something like that.

I'm one of the very lucky sjoggies that rarely run fevers. When I was in my thirties I had a bad spell and ran low grade fevers everyday for about 4 months. It was horrible. I've never had another episode like that. I get hot sweats and night sweats but my temperature doesn't change.

Thanks folks - I'll mention it to the doc sometime. I've taken photos of my ankles so if they are not swollen when I see her - I can say "that's what they keep doing!"

Ohhh, photos! Such a good idea! My ankles and feet (Even the soles of my feet - feel slike I am walking on grapefruit) and hands swell now, especially at night. I had to take off my rings, as I am afraid of more nerve damage/pain if I leave them on and my hands get really swollen.

I've had swolleness on my left ankle for a few years.  It would flucuate but never go down completely to look like my right side.  I've been to a podiatrist before, he found nothing, took xrays, said my feet didn't look like I had arthritis in my feet.  He made some custom arch supports that didn't help at all.  My calves are often tight, my husband tells me that I need to stretch more often but not when there's pain.   The  swelling goes down after a hot bath, or after I sleep through the night.  Odd that mine is only on one foot.  Things have been odd since I  hit middle age.

Hi Scottie & Everyone,

I just had to answer this as I having alot of trouble in this area.  I have terrible selling around the ankle bone to the point you can't see my ankle and recently the top of my feet are swollen too and I have had to adjust my Birkis...I have never had to do this.  It has been very humid here (UK) recently maybe that is not helping?.

I have had the ankle swelling for a long time now but my GP seems unconcerned particularly because I am overweight I am trying to lose it but my thyroid condition is still not controlled.  I do feel a bit concerned with this as I am also weeing through the night usually around 3-5 times every night and my urine is often quite frothy.

About a month ago my urine was checked and was fine so 

I would say always check things out with the GP even though we feel like maybe we are being a nuisance.

Please mention this to your GP this week, rather than sometime!

They are probably worse because of the sudden high temperatures we've had here in the UK, but swollen ankles can be a sign of an underlying issue which you should see your GP about asap.  Have you noticed that you're urinating less frequently, or that your pee is darker than usual?  Swollen ankles could just be due to fluid retention because of the weather, or connected to thyroid issues, but could be a sign of something more significant.  Sorry to lecture you but I'm concerned ...!

My rheumy put me on 80 mg Lasix and potassium twice a week for my swollen ankles.  I especially get them when I am walking alot or it is hot. It may be nothing, but be sure to mention it to your dr. as soon as you can.  Pictures are a great idea as it seems I never have the symptoms when it's time to see the doc. Pictures would be good for Social Security also.
