Hi,
I've just come out of hospital after having a tonsilectomy. At the same time they did a labial biopsy. My bottom lip is now numb and i have no feeling. Has this happened to anyone else and does the feeling come back xx

That should be normal if the novacaine is still present - swelling will cause this - your lip will be a mess for a few days

cport,

When I had my lip biopsy, it took quite a long time to heal (a couple of weeks).  Then it was numb for a very long time.  It got progressively more feeling in it each day, but it probably took a year.  That was just my experience.  From reading other people's lip biopsies experiences on this website, I am under the impression that I had a butcher do my biopsy.  Hope you feel better soon.  A tonsilectomy is big surgery, too!

Hi cport  :)

I can't comment on the lip because it's not something I've ever had done. I hope you recover well from your tonsilectomy and feel better soon.

Take care - Scottie  :)

My lip is numb two years after the procedure and I would not recommend this to anyone who has a choice about having it.

Part of my lip was very numb for several months and now its just a very tiny spot that's numb.  It's been about 1.5 years.  Hope that you feel better soon!

Luckily, most of the doctors that perform lip biopsy's do a good job and you'll have few problems if any, but like Liz and a few others, the ENT that did mine did a lousy job.  I too have a permanent numb area on my lower lip because of this (it's been four years, and I don't think it will go back to normal anytime soon ;) :D).

My lip was a real mess for three weeks until I could get the stitches out (thankfully most people have the dissolvable ones, I wound up with the silk ones (and everything kept getting caught in them - turkey doctor)).  It did take almost three weeks for the swelling to go down, and the lump lasted several months before it finally disappeared.  Ice was my closest friend during those first three weeks, always tried to have a piece on my lip (even at the office).

Hang in there, and take it easy if you can!

Take care -

Thank you everyone for your get well wishes as well as your stories. As i was having my tonsils out anyway the rheumy asked ent to do the biopsy otherwise it would have been maxilofacial who i think are a bit more up on doing the biopsies. the dr who saw me to discharge me was very surprised it was still nunb and has said if not back to normal sensation in a few days to contact them. don't think it's going to be normal any time soon. tonsilectomy has left me more tiered than usual. very sore but resting well.
Thanks again everybody,it's great to have support from everyone on here xxx
