Sjogrens (possibly) and now pre-diabetic :-(

Random bloods have shown me to be pre-diabetic... doctor said its not connected to Sjogrens.  Told me to eat healtily but I do really and she told me to lose weight.  I did remind her I have effortlessly lost 1 1/2 stone since this possible Sjogrens appeared.  I am within the healthy range on the BMI.. do I really need to aim at losing weight?   She hasnt given me any ideas on diet as such so I am guessing as to what she means.. ie more fruit and veg and less meat and fatty stuff.

Anyone else have diabetes or pre-diabetes?  Any tips?  She says to eat three meals a day but as I am never hungry I will find this hard to do...

Hi Fluffie

I'm sorry to hear about this new dx. From what yiou say - it doesn't sound weight related.

Does your GPs practice have a dietician attached to it?  If I were you I would either ask for an appointment with the practice dietician or the practice nurse. They must have dietry advice for people with diabetes2 (the one that can be controlled by diet and sometimes pills but that only needs insulin as a last resort)

I have a friend at work who has diabetes2 and she actually goes to a diabetic clinic every so often. She IS overweight and I somehow doubt her 'diet' is going to work because I don't think she sticks to it and I've seen her eating some very weird stuff!
I KNOW she was given dietry advice though so it must be available.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Well Fluffie, I think you are one sensible and clever girl!

You seem to be doing everything right,    youv'e lost weight , but has this happened suddenly, and was it over a short time, and without trying?

If not then I'd say youv'e not much to worry about!   I do think that todays medical boffins seem to blame everything on our diet and weight..

I only wish I could say that I am never hungary.. Ive just baked a date, coffee and walnut cake, and can't wait till it's cooled !!!

Don't worry too much about it, thats bad for you too!  Dolly x

I went from 11stone 2lbs to 9stone 8lbs since September without trying... this is the time I have been ill with suspected Sjogrens.  I am never hungry so cant even fit in my "five a day" fruit and veg...

Hi Fluffie

Sorry to hear about your pre-diabetes diagnosis.  You must be feeling pretty worried by it, particularly because your doctor gave you such mixed messages about what you should do.

I've been losing weight fast recently too and it's the oddest thing.  Partly it's due to not having much of an appetite, but mostly it's because I feel so unwell when I do eat.  So it's easier not to.  I know that's a dangerous thing so I've been trying to schedule small snacks at regular intervals, and not expecting myself to eat proper meals.  Do you think that might work for you?  I don't worry about 5 a day any more but I'm just pleased if I eat half an apple, or some hummous with celery sticks.  I buy baby sized yogurts/fromage frais and then I'm pleased when I eat a whole one!

Hope you get some answers soon.

The problem is, its impossible to fit all the things in to eat in a day.  I havent had any guidance as to what I should and shouldnt be eating other than "eat healthy food".

I am really struggling with everything at the moment as I am now unable to sleep - but have to keep going as I work and support my two children and have a mortgage to pay.   I am thinking of getting some sleeping pills.

Hi fluffie,

I'm sorry to hear about the latest in your long struggle, wow, you've got to be worried about what is next.

Scottie's right, can you see a dietitian?  Or can you get an appointment with an endocrinologist maybe?  I would think that would be your best bet to help with the latest diagnosis.

Hang in there my friend, and keep us posted, okay?

Take care -

Patze

Hi Fluffie,

I was diagnosed as diabetic a little over a year ago! One of the first things my doctor did was to get me in touch with a nutritionist who works with diabetics. She went through the whole "good food choices" with me and how to count carbs, etc.

She also set up several meal plans for me to follow according to my weight and blood sugar. These are general plans just giving me guidelines on how many carbs, fats, etc to eat each day/meal. The trick for diabetics is to eat more meals but smaller portions. I am supposed to eat 6 times a day....3 meals, and 3 snacks!

I would definitely get with you doctor again for a referral.....if you can control it with diet and exercise alone...that is the best way. I unfortunately did not control the sugars levels with diet alone and was put on medication....I was just recently (less than a month ago) increased on the same med and had a second medication added.

Good luck to you!

Thanks for the replies.. I have booked into see the nurse at my surgery for diet info next Friday.  She is also gonna test my blood pressure as it was reading very high when I saw the doctor yesterday with the neck pains.

I should change the title of this thread to now say "Sjogrens (possibly) and now pre-diabetic :-( and now High blood pressure :-(" ..... the title just gets longer and longer.
