Just interested in knowing if any of you use Zyrtec?  I got some information from another site, that the zyrtec might help Jenna with her allergies and her allergic reactions to bug bites.  We bought the childrens Zyrtec and gave her her first does yesterday.  We also have started her on vitamins and am thinking about the fish oil.   Hugs and Kissess  Jonnell and Jenna

Hi Jonnel,
I have taken Zyrtec for allergic reactions, such as hives.  It's quite good and no after effects.  I didn't know you could get it over the counter.  Mine has always been by Rx only.

I've taken a similar drug, called loratadine, every day for the last 6 years. I had an awful time with allergies before then, so although these drugs can add to the dryness, they have been a Godsend to me.

Yes Zyrtec is over the counter now.  Jenna has taken 2 doses and has already make a improvement.

I take zyrtec generic otc and even though I'm supposedly nonallergic it seems to help this awful postnasal drip I get during spring due to rhinitis. I switched my almost 9 yr old to it cuz our insurance was getting picky with allegra. She actually has shown improvement I think. I've just switched my twins to it as a trial and so far so good with them too. Doesn't seem to have any bad side effects. They had been on claritin b-4 that. I actually don't seem dried out at all from it and I seemed to get over this last cold better, cuz I have chronic sinus problems. Good luck to any of you---Net

I dispense Zyrtec alot at work, alot of patients allergic to detergent in the sheets we use etc, but id not use it to prevent the reaction, rather to just deal with it when it happens.

I know i use calladryl lotion ( anti histamine cream)   for bug bites with my kids we have a biting small mosquito type bug here, in summer theyre everywhere the dreaded scottish midgie, bit with boots on they do, and my kids come up in itch bumps at times with their bites, but i use the lotion with good effect and not the oral drug, really not sure of the lonf term side effects of using it.

My partner gets hayfever, badly and cant take zyrtec and the likes he collapses as he is allergic to them, but i found he can use nasal spray and anti histamine eye drops with good effect :)

Speak to your GP or pharasist about the lotions as opposed to the tablet form, if the problem is just topical might work just as well.

What i do do, is i make my own all natural insect reppellant, works very well, even my dad uses it, its sweet almond oil( can use rapeseed if nut allergy) and essential oils of lavender, citronella, patchouli   it takes the horrid smell away from citronella alone, and lavender and patchouli are both bug reppelling.

Another good tip is basil plants growing on your window sill, bugs hate them and i never get a fly in my kitchen all summer, so that might help indoors with the bugs.I just buy mines from supermarket, repot them, and give them plenty water as basil soaks water up fast, not only do i have my own culinary herb to use, but bug control at a really cheap price :)

Be VERY VERY careful with Zyrtec.

Some people are OK with it, but other people, including children, have numerous insidious and diverse side effects such as severe depression, weight gain, suicidal thoughts, and an intense withdrawal itch (usually mistaken for their allergies). Many of these side effects are not listed by the manufacturer.

Even if you think you are ok with Zyrtec, search the net for 'Zyrtec Withdrawal', and 'Zyrtec side effects' and 'ask a patient'
to read literally thousands of complaints from people who wish they had never heard of this drug.

Hi Dial and welcome

I took Zyrtec (ceterizine) about five years ago. It caused me eyelid problems, causing ptosis ib one eye in particular. I was tested for Myasethenia Gravis because of this. It was only when I stopped taking it that the ptosis resolved.

Currently I take loratadine, and I tolerate if pretty well.

Thank you for the information.  Zyrtec has really helped Jenna and her headaches and bug bite reaction,  but I will be sure to keep a eye for side effects.
