Thanks for the info.  I have never trusted artificial sweeteners and didn't think I used them.  Then while reading the article I realized I am constantly chewing sugar free gum due to dry mouth!  Does anyone know of an alternative to sugar free or sugar laden gum?

Sugar free gum or Ricola drops is the only sugar free product that I use.  I'd be very interested in an alternative.

You can get the gum that is solely sweetened by Xylitol.  I think Biotene makes one, too.    The one I ordered off the internet is called Zapp.  I don't like it as much as the regular gum, but it's supposed to help fight cavities.

Sorbital is one of the sweeteners and it causes a lot of gas. I would bet that xylitol is a derivitive and will cause gassiness.

Just for your information, I chewed sugarless gum for over 20 years and haven't chewed the gum for about 5 years now. However, I do suck on the Hall's sugar free cough drops to help moisten my mouth, soothe my throat and kill my bad breath from all my infections. I ain't dead yet but I can't promise anything!!! Irish ;D

Irish,

You are correct, sugar alcohols  cause gas and diarrhea if not used in moderation.  For me 3 pieces of candy in one day have me running to the throne.  They have the same effect as prunes, because prunes contain sugar alcohol, which are not sugars or alcohol.  The long term effects of sugar alcohols are not know, so trading them for sugar may not be any healthier, made you'll get artificial diabetes :D

Some of the sugar alcohols are xylitol ,lacititol Maltitol sorbitol and maltitol, to name a few, not sure if they are all spelled correctly.
I believe these are all considered carbs.

I also gave up artificial sweeteners.  I use Stevia and Agave syrup.  I have a lot of sugar free candies sitting around that I don't eat anymore. lol
