I just wanted to mention that yesterday at my dental appointment the hygenist gave me a copy of this month's cover story from the Journal of the American Dental Association.  It was about SJS.  The study involved over 1000 SJS cases.  It provided the symptoms and the percentages of the population studied who had each symptom.  The focus was to provide better education about our syndrome so that dental professionals would be better able to recognize patients with SJS so that diagnosis would be achieved more quickly.

Oh wow! The world is starting to understand what we go through every day.  This is great news Tucker, thanks for letting us know.  I will have to ask my dentist when I see him if he still has his and see if he will lend it to me to read.  (We are also neighbors ;D)

Tucker,

Did the article mention about dental treatment of Sjogren's patients?

I'm having trouble getting my dentist to do the prophylaxis stuff like fluoride varnish, and prescription toothpaste.  He doesn't seem to want to help me keep my teeth from crumbling??...I w$nder why....

Here's a link to the story.  Don't know why I didn't think of it before................................ DUH!

You have to be a member to read the full text, but this gives you an idea of what that is.

Have a great day everyone.

Janna,

I am very lucky to have this dentist.  His hygenist took an interest in me right from the start because her grandfather had Sjogrens.  He was blind by the time he was in his twenties because they just did not have treatments for dry eyes back then.  When she found out I had SJS she gave me a whole bag full of things to try - free samples.  They give me the fluoride rinse too.  They have also changed the way they clean teeth - they use an ultrasonic cleaner that is supposed to remove biofilm from the teeth.  They seem to stay on top of the profession.  Hope you can find a dentist like mine.

Thanks for that Tuckerdog

It's very reassuring that another profession are taking this illness serious - long may it continue.  I'm in UK so won't be able to see it, shame the British Dental Association can't follow suit.  My dentist only has one other patient with SjS, and she had no end of trouble due to sipping lemonade to quench her thirst all through the day.  Definitely not recommended!!!

Ironically, I'd seen my dentist the day before that came out and had told him that it was likely that I have Sjogren's- which, after working in my mouth, he concurred with.  I'm lucky that he's an awesome dentist, even if he's done my last 3 filling without numbing me, (!) but he made sure to give me a little trial package of Biotene stuff.  I found several pharmacies near me that have that stuff, too!

I went back a few days ago to have a small filling and another molar preventatively "sealed" and he told me about that article!

Indeed this is excellent news..  Since I now have dentures,  sadly won't concern me so much, but I do wish that here in  the UK that the general opticians were much more informed about S.S.   We are so behind in this country with many subjects  , of course  we have a wonderful National Health Service, just wish someone would come along and shake them up a little about SS.. Ah well someday.. cheers Dolly

I typed in The journal of the American Dental Association, and then typed n Sjogren's Syndrome, and several articles came up. One was about a dental hygienist who was diagnosed with SS.

Newbie, haven't even introduced myself yet, just wildly reading and feeling already not alone!  Seeing my dentist tomorrow ($15,000 out of pocket this year above insurance) and hoping she has the article and will copy for me. What a wealth of information you guys are!
