I am hoping that everyone on this list is reasonably well tonight.   :)   I have had a few good days and more bad days but I guess I need to take them one day at a time.  I had an MRI on my head and thankfully nothing was found.  Well actually I do have half a brain but well you know what I mean.  lol   Anyway the guy that ordered the MRI wanted me to go talk to a sleep specialist.  I said ok.  Since nothing else is getting anywhere.  Sooooo I went and this guy comes in and starts asking questions and well til he got done I was sooo confused and so upset.  I heard him say partly under his breath when I mentioned I had been diagnosed as having Fibromyalgia last August, "Fibromyalgia is sooo over rated."  Now what was that supposed to mean????   He told me you don't have to go into REM sleep to get a good nights sleep and a bunch of other stuff that I was way too confused.  He said well lets set up that sleep study test for you and I said no.  I wanted to visit with my hubby about it.  So he goes well don't wait too long.  I do not like this guy.  I hope he never gets Fibromyalgia but if he does I want to tell him how OVER RATED it is.  *sigh*  Sorry guys just had to rant a bit here.  Thanks for listening.

Hi Modistee,

You have every right to be angry! I would have been too! The comment this man made was not only hurtful but also incorrect and unprofessional! Maybe someone a little higher up than him ought to know how he treats people who come in for help! Then they will also know why you are requesting someone else to work with when you have to have your sleep study done if thats what you decide to do......he cant be the only sleep specialist in the hopsital...and if he is...there are other hospitals.

Good luck to you and I'm sorry that you had to run into someone so inconsiderate and unprofessional!

Modistee, Go find yourself another sleep study doc. Much of the time it is the neurologist or pulmonologists who order them. I just had one last week. This was my second. The first one I had some poor REM sleep and this time I passed with flying colors or so it sounds. I have to go back to see the pulmonary doc.

What I am trying to say is that REM sleep is important and you need to have people you feel comfortable with. Especially when you are sleeping overnight at a clinic. I put mine off for a long time as I felt I was not that bad. If you are really exhausted and miserable I guess I would get in as soon as I could. It makes a huge difference having a good nights sleep. Good luck Irish ;D

Hi Modistee,
We can only hope the next time he has to see a doctor, he is dx'd with Fibro. ;D  Wouldn't it be wonderful?

I am so sorry you had this happen.  I can't tell you how many times I have heard this same thing from my daughter.  She also has Fibro and suffers terribly with it.  Are you taking Lyrica?  It has been a Godsend for her.

Take care dear and don't let rude people like this upset.  I would say he was ignorant too.

Rant all you want, that's why we are here.

Okay, first of all, was this the neurologist who had ordered the MRI or the polysomnography tech who said fibro is so overrated?? Because if it was the neuro, it sounds to me as if his attempt at sarcasm was way off. Many doctors think fibro is over diagnosed, but overrated??? (Blink, blink??)

Secondly, if it was the polysomnography tech, he needs to be set straight-he is practicing without a license. Pure and simple.

Thirdly, I cannot believe that either a neuro or a polysomnography tech would be so thick as to think that REM sleep is not paramount to good sleep and better health, promoting a better immune system.

I say I cannot believe it, but I don't mean I don't believe you. I just find myself stunned at the level of ignorance that still abounds out there. Neuro or sleep tech..whoever said those two things was a blooming idiot. No wonder you are needing to vent. I'd think he needs a swift kick in the pants and a lot more education! Tell us where he is, we'll help ya! Whatta dufus!

Hi Modistee,
I am sorry to hear that you were treated like that.  It makes me think of the time about 5 years ago when I went to see a Neurologist that was the biggest idiot of all time.  He was so awful that to think that this man could come close to calling himself a doctor, much less a surgeon is beyond me.  He sat there and started acting like me in asking questions that I would not have asked in the first place and he totally missed the mark.  I have Spinal Stenosis, Scoliosis and degenerative disc disease and Anklingspongilitits, and Osteo-arthritis of the spine.  I think that is how it is spelled.  Well anyway this man was so rude and ugly towards me that I felt like grabbing him and knocking him out.  I got out of his office as fast as I could.  Last December I had to have a disc replaced and fusion of a couple of vertebrae with a titanium clip to keep the nerves from being pinched.  This doctor totally missed everything.  Unfortunately we have some really sorry individuals practicing medicine that should not be in practice.  You have to watch out for them and avoid them if possible.  I would find a different doctor and I would also notify the AMA about what was said to you.  I turned this man in, but I don't know if anything ever came of it.  Good luck in finding a different doctor.

Hugs,
Kathy

you will find as you wander the minefield of medical tests for any disease, there are many out there who have never been sick a day in their lives, and truly do not understand what it feels like to be distressed by anything more than a hang over, or a basic flu. They dont have the ability to look within and compare anything within their lives to be able to display any empathy for you, or your family. they dont know the exhaustion of chasing a medical dx. They dont know the agony of laying awake night after night feeling like you are going to crack in half, and that lonely feeling that goes with being in limbo land. I never wish any sickness on anyone, but its sure a relief when you run across nurses or techs that truly understand what it truly means to not feel good. To be so exhausted that you cant get out of your own way, and to be so tired, you cant imagine fighting for one more day, only to find yourself standing up with your boxing gloves on.

I pray each of you find compassionate care by someone who truly gets it. You can ask to be seen by another tech, or another center, or to be seen on that man's day off. Will he be insulted? probably! will you get better treatment? probably.  Or you can speak out to him, and say "HEY! whether YOU believe in my MDs dx or or not, should not influence your treatment of me. I have been sent to be evaluated, and I would be most happy if you would treat me as if you believe in MDs even if you dont believe in me." if he gets it he will apologize and you can get your test. If not, then please ask to be seen by another tech.

My rheumy has Sjogrens like me.   :D   Her office staff could be brought up to par, but I know she at least feels some of what we have.

After 30 -35 years of going from doctor to doctor looking for a dx to this insidious disease, I was blessed with a fabulous rheumy.  Knowing him and how compassionate he is, whenever I need a referral to a specialist in our area, I go to him.  I ask him who he would see if it were him.  He has never steered wrong, with the exception of once.  I'll even give this one a second chance, he could have had a bad day.

The great doctor's are out there, you just have to keep looking and praying.

Hello
I guess I am lucky. I am sorry about your problem I don't know where you live but we in Virginia have several Fibermyalgai drs. Thank god mine which is my regular md. believes in it. He put me on Cymbulta. I take 90 mgs every day. If I didn't take it I would be in so much pain. I hope you will find a great dr. too. He sent me to a rumy and he checked everything out and told me the first visit I had Sjogrens. So I have Sjogrens and Fibermyalgia. My poor cousin has all kinds of tissue disorders. I told her about the cymbulta and her Drs. tried it They could not believe how it helped her. she said it was a mircle. ask your new dr. about it. Good Luck Theresa

Hi Modistee

That's a doc who should be 'struck off'! How dare he talk to you like like that - or about you like that.  If doctors aren't prepared to empathise they should dtick to doing research - though it sounds like he hasn't actually done much about REM sleep for a start.

It's doc's like that, that undermine us and make us wonder if we're crazy - and we're NOT.

I'm with Irish. Time for a change.  (I'd also write a letter to someone about him and maybe stop him doing the same thing to someone else!)

Take care - Scottie  :)

This guy is actually a neurologist who specializes in sleep but with the way he was talking I am very afraid to go to him.   :o  I am thinking I will NOT be going there for the sleep study.  Am not sure what I will do but there is another hospital and one of my clients works there and said the sleep guys there are very very good.  And they don't tell you something if overrated.  I thought I was imagining that he said that but I know what I heard and am thinking he should have been a little more discreet about his comments.  I would change places with him gladly so he could find out that it is not as over rated as he thought.  *sigh*  Wish I could move where you guys are.   Sounds like you have wonderful DRs. there.  I have not found many here.  In 6 of them I have found one that was pretty nice and she is working at trying to figure out what is going on.  Will give her tons of credit there.  Thanks to all of you and great big hugs if I didn't hurt so much today.
