A new study claims a specific bacteria in the gut is responsible for autoimmune diseases when it translocates in the body.
Most importantly: It can be treated with antibiotics.  :)

Sjogren's (+ RA): positive ANA, RNP, RNP-A, APCA. Severe eye dryness + inflammation, multiple sensitivities and allergic reactions, fatigue.
ORENCIA, Restasis, Anti-inflammatory diet, Vit. D & C, Ubiquinol 100mg, Omega 3....

I read this, and tried to do a bit of research. I hope they do find something to help all of us even if it helped me 30% or I guess any percent from where I am today, I would be very happy. Thank you for posting this.  :)

Thanks for posting Sharon. I always feel heady about these things until I read something like " suggest promising new approaches for treating chronic autoimmune conditions." The word suggest throws me because I know it's a hope still, not an answer. Also looks like they might need to prevent this with a vaccine v. treat, but as Susanep said, we can hope. Fingers crossed that this or one of the many SjS drugs in trial will work!!
Raynauds, sero-negative RA, Primary SjS, osteopenia, degenerative disc disease, disc protrusions, stenosis, Carpal tunnel,  poly neuropathy, myoclonus, hiatal hernia, esophagitis, viral infection, Leukopenia. Restasis, Vitamin D, B12, Evoxac, Lanzoprezole, calcium acetaminophen.

Sharon

This is a much simpler approach.
We can get checked for the bacteria in question and antibiotic treatment is readily available.
Sjogren's (+ RA): positive ANA, RNP, RNP-A, APCA. Severe eye dryness + inflammation, multiple sensitivities and allergic reactions, fatigue.
ORENCIA, Restasis, Anti-inflammatory diet, Vit. D & C, Ubiquinol 100mg, Omega 3....

Sharon,
What bacteria would we ask for to be checked? If you find out anymore on this please let us know.

Thank you,

I suppose "Enterococcus Gallinarum" ...or something similar.  Would be great if this translates into a viable treatment option...

Sharon

According to the original study what we specifically need for diagnosis is:
PCR analysis of a cultured stool sample for E. gallinarum
OR:
Tesing for serum antibody titers against E. gallinarum and particularly its RNA
Sjogren's (+ RA): positive ANA, RNP, RNP-A, APCA. Severe eye dryness + inflammation, multiple sensitivities and allergic reactions, fatigue.

A video came out on this study.
I've added a link to it in the original post above.

i have had low t cells and IgG levels and have had so many infections over the past 40+ years. I would guess I have been on antibiotics 100 times and on several for one year ay a time. Darned if I don't think they should have killed off the bacteria responsible for the Sjogrens. Life isn't fair sometimes!!!Ugh. Irish

Sharon

irish- Perhaps the bacteria has become antibiotic resistant in your case since you've been on antibiotics so often? Anyways, they don't yet know if every case of AI is caused by this. The suggestion of creating a vaccine to treat the bacteria sounds intriguing and may work for those who are antibiotic resistant.

Hi Sharon,
Interesting study, thanks for posting it  :)

Did you find out which type and how much AB they used?
54. DES-daughter ('67), Lyme's ('98), GAD ('98), Sjogren's ('02) - changed to Sicca ('20), hypothyroid ('04), endometriosis ('14), osteoarthritis ('16), blepharitis & MGD ('18), Pilocarpine, thyroid meds, 12.5mg quetiapine. Allergies: sodium hydroxide, nickle, methylisothiazolinone, latex

Ah, in the separate link it mentions Vancomycin was used in the study - a last resort medication for the treatment of septicemia and lower respiratory tract, skin, and bone infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria. Usually given IV, but tablets are available too... (which are poorly absorbed).

Interesting tidbit: Vancomycin is made by the soil bacterium Amycolatopsis orientalis.

Yes Maria, it mentions Vancomycin but the amount to be used in a human subject was not determined in the study. It also mentions vaccine which might be a better route.
