Cataracts

Hi  - I've been in here long enough that I should be able to answer the question I'm going to ask - but the brainfog is quite bad just now as thyroid meds are being adjusted yet again.

How do Sjoggies cope with cataract surgery?

I went to the optician because I was having trouble reading things on TV - and reading the computer screen is getting worse too.

They told me I wasn't due to see them till next April but agreed to test because of sight deterioration.

Result of eye test was they can't do anything other than refer me to an opthamologist for cataract surgery as a cataract has 'grown' half way over one eye. I asked if it was the one they spotted at the last test and they said no - that had been the other eye and it was still insignificant.

Well....I am not yet at the cataract stage...but I can say that my hubby went through cataract surgery on both eyes....and bad results in both eyes resulting in a second surgery on both eyes and now is fine.   Turns out the wrong lenses were put in.   They switched out the lenses.   He is now fine although I drive at night.

With SJS the issue is dry eyes.  Obviously that should be brought up up front with the doctor.   My hubby had had Lasik and any surgery like that can compromise the eyes from a dryness perspective.   Get the best eye doc you can.

Had both eyes done and had no issues with either one.

FYI I learned that taking steroids can cause cataracts to form at a earlier age than typical.

Thank you for the info. I dont see an alternative to trying to get it fixed. My hearing isn't very good and I REALLY need my sight!

At the moment I feel as though I have a big smear on my glasses - but if I clean them it makes no difference. I don't like a blurry world!

Luckily we have a very good eye-hospital near to us. There may be quite a waiting list but I have an appointment in November so will find out more then. They check me out once a year because of the SjS and dryness - so they know that already. Last years appointment this particular cataract wasn't showing up. There is one beginning in the other eye - that was there last year - but it hasn't progressed.

Blurry vision isn't safe, so having the surgery seems like a good decision.  When I had my eyelid surgery last year, my eyes were very light sensitive afterwards.  I found that wearing orange (blue blocking) glasses was a real help at first. If you can stay off computers and phone screens for awhile, that might help.  You might not need that protection from cataract surgery, though.
