I started having a sore throat on friday.  Preceeded to get worse with a temp of 101.6, headache, swollen glands, white spots on tonsils.. very hard to swallow. Was seen in urgent care today. they did a rapid strep, it came back negative... He believes there is an infection to my parotid gland and or possibly a stone blocking a duct... Just wondering if anyone has ever had this happen? this is the second time this yr. first time was in April.. exact same symptoms ...is this related to my Sjogrens?
Tired of having reacurances like this..

Hi Murphin,
Welcome to the forum....and hold on.  It WILL be a bumpy ride whether you are positive or negative for SjS.  You don't make it clear.
I can only answer your question in relation to my own experiences.  I had blocked parotid glands (which I know of) for about 5 years prior to my sjs dx.  My symptom (one symptom) was a sharp pain which practically took me to my knees.  I don't recall if I had temperature...ever.  I did not have a sore throat such as you describe.  I was suffering other oral cavity discomforts during that period.  None of them stopped me dead in my tracks like the sialadenitis.  I was always treated for bacterial infection related to sialadenitis.  I might add the ENT (nor my GP who treated me at times) never suggested SjS.  My occurrences were (in the first year or so) would be about twice a month, then about once a month, etc and so on.  The pain wasn't always 10 on a 1-10 scale.  Some were 3 to 5.  I learned to place VERY warm compresses on my cheek/ear and also do what I call the upside down J massage.  This got the sludge moving maybe as often as half the time.  You can google that and find instructions.  In fact, you can search on this site and a lot of information can be found.
Good luck.  I am all about gaining some amount of comfort for the various ailments we suffer in relation to SjS.  If you have temp I would think a physician would have given you an antibiotic alone if your discomfort took you to Urgent Care.  A bad sore throat doesn't always have to be rooted in streptococcus.

I see you have diagnosis of Sjogrens. The symptoms you ar put oute describing are very much a problem that occurs with Sjogrens. THe mucuc is so thick that we make in the glands that it sort of sits and doesn't move. As time goes on stones form out of the various chemicals that are in the mucus or saliva.

We need to keep our fluid intake up and it also helps to take Salogen or Evoxac which are drugs that help to stimulate the salivary production and secretion. Also, sucking on lemons or lemon drops will help the glands to put out some saliva. This can hurt at times cause it is the same sensation that occurs when one sucks on a dill pickle. Also, placing a warm rice bag around these glands and then later massage the glands very gently on a routine basis help to move the saliva/mucus along through the ducts.

One has to be careful with massage when there is a stone formed. For your information when you have tiny stones being formed that are secreted it will feel like you have sand or fiberglass in your mouth. I had this happen a lot years ago and none of the doctors could understand what I was talking about. I still it happen from time to time. The antibiotic will help lots but you should see ENT about this to see if this is one stone that has taken up residence and needs to be removed. Stones can sort of float back and forth without being expelled. The other thing is that you may be making lots of little stones that are bein expelled and once in a while one gets too big to pass. Good luck. Irish
