Adult acne

Sorry such a strange topic.  But, I'm pretty amazed.  I'm in my mid fifties.  Just visited family for Thanksgiving.  I was very tired and feel I'm in a little flare...but not too bad.  While there I broke out in pimples.  I have three now, one went away. They do not have white heads.  They are very red.  I am ill equipped for this, since I don't have pimple,soap or creams at my age. I just put peroxide on the first one and it went away. But, then I got three worse ones.  Very red. I read that sometimes inflammation can cause this. I've had bad insomnia, and my diet has been a little whacky, but not excessively.  My skin is slightly oily, but right now moreso.  What in the world is going on? Has anyone had this happen to you? Any good natural remedies? Thank you.

Hi Nomad, I am 63 and I have been breaking out badly for several months. This coincided with a a job change. I don't handle change well at all and I think it is from the stress of adjusting to a new job. I have also been flaring with increased pain and a great deal of fatigue. My own theory is that yes, inflammation caused by anything (stress in my case) can cause acne.

What in the world?!!! Along with everything else, I have to get a bunch of pimples on my increasingly wrinkled face at age 63???!!!! :-) Not fair! :-)

Uhm, it might not be acne, but pseudo acne that can happen with autoimmune disease. It also can happen from prednisone as a side effect. May also be skin lesions, my daughter with Behcet's suffers from that quite badly.

I have had an increase in Acne since this whole Sjogrens thing came on.   It is not a lot but annoying.  Comes and goes.  I find that plain old soap and coconut oil usually does them in.

It could be hormones (50's are menopausal years for most)

could be acne rosacea (does happen in middle age years)

Hi 

are you on prednisone? My son has Crohn's disease and if it flares he has to take prednisone and he gets what is called 'prednisone acne'.

I hope you find out what's causing the pinples and that they clear up soon.

sorry, i think its less dramatic. its like the mucous, the grease of the skin is more thick and remains stuck in the pores, i also had a couple of those and they went away in three days, they were red without pus

I have some acne because I am perimenopausal. I am told that because the androgens (male hormones) are out of balance with my declining estrogen levels that this causes acne. The only thing that keeps my acne in check is the prescription Spironolactone (off label use).

If I take any oral steroids for inflammation, then my skin breaks out like crazy with cystic acne. The skin on my face is extremely oily and the Spiro is the only thing that keeps it in check by knocking down my androgen levels.

You may want to ask a dermatologist about Spironolactone, it has really helped my skin. Take care.

This week my mother would have had her 104th birthday.  She died at age 70....and had battled adult acne for about the last 10 years of her life.  She took an oral medication for it...but I do not think it is the med most teens take now.  (I forget the name)  I am offering this info as she had an auto immune disease:  Plaque psoriasis  (severe).  Diagnosed at age 30.  The acne didn't bother her at all...after battling the psoriasis more than half her life.  I had a spate of break outs during peri and menopause.  Lasted about 4 or 5 years.  Never took meds or had an Rx for a topical med. 

When I think of "adult" acne I think of post 60.  The other "adult" acne is that last spurt of hormones (I THINK)  I do not know!!  Just what I think from growing old and observations!!

It is maddening. I am using a new skin care line that I really like a lot..but no matter how great the products feel on my skin or add moisture..what is happening internally is driving the bumps, skin lesions & hives that have decided to share my body.

47 year old male with Sjogrens.   I have had bouts of acne since this disease started.  Mine tends to come and go.   Sucks feeling like a teen again.   I use coconut oil when I first notice acne.   Works most of the time.
