Ultrasound on thyroid etc

Just come back from the hospital and had my salivary glands, submandibular and thyroid examined.  Doc said no sign of inflammation, no sign of damage and all seems to be working fine. He apologised for not finding anything and said that the lip biopsy will maybe show something. Has anyone else had this? I'm relieved there is no damage or inflammation, not sure why he was apologising...

I have never had an ultrasound of my salivary glands. I am wondering if they have ever done the testing of the glands where they place lemon juice on the tongue. They have suction cups with tubing that allows the secreted saliva to be measured. Basically, it is the old adage of lemon or pickle juice causing you to pucker and secrete saliva.

I had this test done in the Sjogrens study at the University in my state. I secreted very little saliva which was indicative of Sjogrens. I also had the ophthalmologist test for the dry eyes---which I had. I had symptoms for 40 years and the dry eyes were the last symptom that I got.

Sometimess some of the older tests are quite accurate in diagnosis. The newer more expensive tests don't always run 100% accurate. This makes one wonder if more that one diagnostic test should be done. Just a thought. Irish

Thanks   They were looking for inflammation and damage as far as I'm aware.  Apparently the next step is MRI is the ultrasound doesn't show anything.  I'll see what the lip biopsy comes up with.  I was just wondering if others had had this test and whether it had shown anything with them or if they've had the same result as me

I've just had an ultrasound on the hands to check for inflammation of the joints.  They said that there are signs of arthritis not related to rheumatoid arthritis that about 80% of people have and it's not autoimmune related.  I'll speak to my doctor about that but has anyone else had an ultrasound to check for joint inflammation and if so were yours also negative or did they find something for Sjogrens. At the moment I've no positive test for RA.  Any help or insight would be appreciated

I had a body scan of some sort years ago to check for rheumatoid arthritis and it showed that I had the same type of arthritis of which you speak. It is called osteoarthritis and is extremely common. It can also cause swelling in the joints with pain.

I have it in the joints of my fingers and in my wrists. It is basically the wear and tear of life that causes it. It can be so painful with the swelling and some redness and goes away in shows up in another joint. The pain and swelling of arthritis is much worse and needs much more in the way of medication to calm it down. RA can also show nodules that can drain and be really beyond miserable. Irish

Does osteoarthritis effect the whole body then?  Could the inflammation and swelling I have (I understand you're not a medical doctor) be due to this arthritis or does it effect only one or two areas at a time?  Do you mean the pain and swelling osteoarthritis or RA is much worse?  I'm in a heck of a lot of pain so I'm assuming the former.  Thanks
