Pantaprasole and urinary retention

Hi

I was given Pantaprazole instead of omeprazole for GERD earlier this week. The omeprazole wasn't cutting it and I was having major sore throat and voice problems. I need to be able to speak for my job, so thought the change was an opportunity to clear the GERD up.

However, since taking the Pantaprazole I feel constantly 'full up', have no appetite and have noticed I'm not going to the toilet half as much as usual, and when I do, I'm not passing anything like my usual amount.

I have had complete bladder retention in the the past following gyny surgery and then a couple of times after spinal anaesthesia, and know this is not complete retention.

Have you experienced anything similar? Do you have any words of wisdom? I have some catheters in a cupboard somewhere, so could use one after emptying what I can, but I'm not a fan of catheters, so might wait and see how the next day or two go. Oh, and I'm a bit headachey, but am not running a temp.

Yes, Prevacid, the med you are taking was very constipating for me.  Most of the PPIs have either constipation or diarrhea  as a side effect.  Nexium is a stronger version of Prilosec or the generic equivalent you were taking.  It may not be constipating for you.  It is worth a try.

Hope you can find one that works for you.

This is something that you need to tell your doctor. He will want to stop this med, I think, and put you on something else.

I will tell you that I was put on protonix many years ago and my colon just sort of seized up. I could hardly eat as I felt like the peristalsis in my intestines had stopped or at least slowed down a lot==which it had. We are all different and sometimes meds will just do a job on our body and we need to let the doctor know.

Inability to void or empty your bladder is nothing to mess around with. Good luck Irish

While there is a similarity between all PPI (proton pump inhibitor), Prevacid is actually lansoprazole, not pantoprazole. Protonix is the trade name in the US for panto. In Canada it's sold as Tecta.

All PPI have the potential for disruption of the digestive tract (constipation or diarrhea), and decreased urinary output (not necessarily retention) is mentioned in several of the monologues; there is often one of the bunch that suits an individual better than some of the others. It isn't that any are "stronger" or :more effective" than the others, it's that they each have slightly different actions, and as we all know, symptoms and reactions differ for each of us.

Sorry, I also took Protonix and confused the two.  I apologize.  Protonix as well as Prevacid were both very constipating.  I think they tried me on every PPI before discovering  I had gastroparesis.  Prilosec and Nexium were the only two  that did not constipate.  Incidentally,  it was the surgeon I worked for who referred to Nexium as a stronger Prilosec.  Dexilant works best for me.  I have to take 1000 mg of magnesium citrate a day to keep things moving.

Hope you figure things out.

Thanks everyone. I have decided to stop taking it and revert to the omeprazole with Gaviscon as a back up. I'll speak to my GP about it after the weekend.
