Mouth dryness question

Where are you dry in your mouth? All over? Tongue only?

I am very dry on my tongue mostly. The front of my tongue is soft and slippery and seems relatively normal. The rest of my tongue and especially the back is terrible. Lately it looks white, furry and super dry. There also seem to be weird white bumps in the back. My throat is very dry as well. But under my tongue I have saliva. It pools there. My inner lips seem wet also. My teeth are well lubricated. It's my tongue and throat that bother me a lot. Like if I rub my tongue to the roof of my mouth I can hear it. And I shouldn't. It feels cottony and uncomfortable.

Does anyone else notice this partial dryness or disproportionate dryness? Does it mean certain glands are functioning still while others aren't?

You have thrush and you are definitely a sick mama! You need to call your PCP and get some meds for that, it can spread. Is your tongue burning or cracking at all? When I had a bad case of it, it began as me thinking it was just dry. Then it began cracking and bleeding. Noticed those white spots where you have them and then, when it spread to the insides of my cheeks and gums, I knew something was wrong. I had a bad case of it. It did clear up pretty fast with Nystatin (sp?) Hope this helps and I hope you get some relief soon as well. Sorry sickmama!

Yes I agree it is thrush. I too have the driest spots in my mouth in the same places, and I continually fight thrush. It thrives where it is dry and the conditions are right?  right there.

Good luck with treatment. You may also want a very good probiotic.

I get a similar irritate dry tongue, however my mouth is also fairly dry.  But like you indicated, the front of my tongue looks mostly normal however the back gets a while layer that looks to extend into my throat.  It's rough and dry, really irritated.  It definitely started at the same time as my other dry issues. 

My GP thought it was possibly thrush, so I tried all kinds of thrush medicine and even followed the Candida Diet for 3 months, but nothing changed except that I lost a bunch of weight and felt miserable.  So I finally had a swab test done, came back negative for thrush.  After consulting with 2 different ENT's, both said it was most likely a combination of irritated taste buds and bacteria/debris from the dry mouth/throat.   I find that if I use a tongue scraper, most of the white debris clears up and my tongue looks mostly normal for the better part of the day.  Also, if I eat food or drink water, directly after everything looks almost normal. until my mouth gets dry again and starts to feel irritate.

Before doing anything drastic, I would see if you doctor is willing to do a swab test to confirm if it is or isn't thrush.  I took all kinds of unnecessary meds and diet to later find out that wasn't the issue.  It could very well be a yeast issue, but at least in my case it does not appear so.

Thank you for your replies. I am not convinced its thrush. I say that because my baby has thrush as a new born and the appearance was different. White but different. There aren't irritated plaques of white. Smitty described it perfectly. And I'm not a doctor but I would guess the white things are irritated taste buds. The drier my mouth, the whiter my tongue, the weirder my taste is. I still have taste but it goes awry. And my tongue is sore and irritated. I've never tried a tongue scraper. Do they irritate the mouth tissues more?

I just hope this is a long (one month plus) flare and not progression. Perhaps it's due to spring allergies being a trigger for a flare up of the disease.

I really hope you're right and you don't have thrush. But please, get it checked out! I just had a particularly nasty case of thrush that ended up spreading down my esophagus and up into my sinuses. I didn't even realize I had it...my throat just felt incredibly dry and a little fuzzy. I was SO sick and it was NOT fun.
