Sooki

There are three sources of saliva in the mouth - under the tongue (sublingual), under the lip (submandibular), and inside the cheeks (parotid).  There is a different mix of compounds secreted from these.  One does mostly mucus (sublingual) and the other two (parotid and submandibular) do a more watery serous secretion that contains enzymes and antibacterial compounds for digestion and tooth protection.

My sublingual saliva glands are up and running overtime.  But my parotid and sublingual aren't doing much of anything (lip biopsy positive too). I have dry mouth and throat and characteristic gumline cavities, etc. but still produce lots of saliva.  So, lots of spit at the dentist, but still cavities and dry mouth.

Salivary Glands on the Wikipedia site gives an introduction to this.
