hello to all

My husband is a very fit and active man....age 57.

Last weekend out of the blue his lower back hurt him, then it traveled

around from there to his side...then down the front of his thigh and

stopped at his knee. He has weakness in that leg and the muscle is jumping

in his thigh and knee cap...I can see it He has numbness to his inner thigh. He claims he did not do anything out

of the ordinary or hurt himself....it just happened. He has missed work all this week.

Been to urgent care...then to GP.....has been tx with prednisone and Tylenol #3

now a new RX for Percocet. Had xrays Wednesday...awaiting call from GP.

Read literature from GP....

how many have had it?

who made a complete recovery, never to have it again or

have it and will always have it?

what tx did you get for it?

thanks for any insight on it.

Well eye2dry,

I don't know.  I have protrusions and stuff, never called herniated.

It sounds as if there is pressure on the nerve, which can cause damage.

that would be the numbness.

This can happen, I hate to say this word, with 'age'.  57 isn't 27 or 37 or even 47.

Years of service = wear and tear.  Sorry bout that.

Here's NIH at Medline, on Herniated Disks,

Hi eye2dry, I have had a few herniated discs. Back problems run in the family. My first was located at L4 and L5. The pain got so incredibly bad I could not sit, stand or ly down. I think the herniated disc was really doing a number on my nerve, the pain shot all the way down to the back of my knee. There was only one thing left to do and have it taken out. 7 years later I was weeding the garden when one wrong move later had me floored and writhing in agony. Yep disc between L4 and L3 busted. Had to take it out and be fused from L5 to L3. Touch wood, it's been over 7 years now and holding up, I don't want to bust another one!
I'm sure there wasn't anything specific your husband did, all it takes is one move at the wrong time. Usually that disc is already stressed from wear and tear and needs just one more move to let you know that now you have really done it!
A lot of people will live with it for years trying pt and medication and do so successfully. The best advice is now that he is aware of it he needs to stop lifting heavy loads and ask for help. Gentle excersises to strengthen the back muscles is also important.
Hope he feels better soon!
