Hello, I have had the scary experience of the  right side of my tongue swelling(a lot)!! It happened the first time two months ago. I was
eating something salty when it first happened and attributed the swelling to that. It happened again last night while I was sleeping...
Same side.

I have a cold right now and had trouble breathing out of my nose.  I took two antihistamines right away and it took three
hours for the swelling to subside. I went to my Doctor and she put me on a one week taper of Prednisone and is referring me to an
allergist as she thinks it is an anaphylactic response to something.

I asked her if it could be a manifestation of my Sjogren's and she did not think the two were related? Has anyone heard of Sjogren's causing tongue swelling?  Thankfully its been one sided or I wouldn't be able to breath at all... I will go for the allergy testing but wondering if there is a link?  Scared it could spread to the whole tongue and unsure of the allergy thing were it happened six hours after going to sleep.

There is a condition called angioedema that can occur. It is basically the swelling of tissues and can result in life threatening symptoms such as the throat swelling shut, etc. The face can swell, eyes, throat, etc. It is basically a problem with the histamine release system if I remember correctly. It is usually treated with something like Zyrtec. I would imagine that this is something that can come in many types and severity and every patient is treated a little differently.

People that have this problem usually take the meds everyday in order to stave off problems. Then if there is a problem more meds can be added if needed. The fact that this is on one side of the tongue makes it almost sound like there could be some neuropathy involved. Good luck in solving this. Irish
