how to send a private message

Well, believe it or not... I HAVE done this.......but I get confused each time and I am currently having trouble sending a message. What the heck do they want me to put in "TO" I keep trying to type the person's name and it won't take it.

Why doesn't the name just automatically show up there since you've already clicked on the person's name to send the message?

You don't have to put anything in there unless you are sending the message to another person.  Once you click the person's name on the forum you want to PM, then select "send PM", their name is automatically entered you just don't see it.

It's very weird. I'm quite familiar with discussion boards, but have never seen a private message function like this one.

The name of the person you are sending to appears just under the dialog box, and if you type another name (to send to more than one person) as soon as you click enter, the second name will drop down under the box as well.
