Radon in the house

hello all.

We live in Central Ohio and our area is a hot bed for radon..which I hear is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer. We are testing our home for the second time from a kit given out by the health dept.

The first reading 2 years ago we did on the first floor and got a reading of 18 and it is unsafe to have anything over 4.

I have excercise equipment in the finished basement and I want to get back on my treadmill and I don't want to huff and puff in radon. So, we are testing a 2nd time but doing it in the basement this time, I want to see what the lowest level reading is.

Question: has anyone else had radon detected in their home? how bad was yours? how did you "remediate" it? are you on a slab foundation, crawl space or have basement? apparently even if your on a concrete slab per our health dept you can have radon leak in through cracks.

I wonder how my parents and grandparents survived with radon? no one knew about it then. I grew up in a home 3 miles from here and we had a basement.
