I want to learn to grow herbs, and even start an herb garden in my yard. (would also help with less mowing lol...) I love plants though, and anything outside. I still have a Christmas Poinsettia bright red in my little kitchen window. heheh.....

I would appreciate any tips if any of you do this.
:)
Thanks

What kind of herbs are you interested in? Many of our common ones are from the Mediterranean, and so don't mind being hot and dry for long stretches of time. I keep a lot of my herbs in big pots on my deck, so I can move them around for different weather conditions. You could start with some of those, and move them out into the garden as you get familiar with their needs.

The various mints are the opposite - they are happy being damp most of the time. Again, pots are good because you can keep them watered and let the others stay dry in their separate pots.

Chives and flat leaf parsley are easy and fun to grow! Mint, especially chocolate mint, is my favourite just for the smell. I also looooooooove basil. Pinch off the tops of mints and basil, oregano, cilantro, etc to encourage bushyness (sp?) And water water water!

The other thing super fun to grow are salad greens. Mesclin and lettuce love planters and shade, grow fast and save you money.

Thanks all for the ideas. I think I will start that way, until I learn what I am doing. I love trying new things.

Mint needs to be kept in a pot. Otherwise, it will take over the whole yard. We have 4 boy dogs; our herb pots need to be pretty high.... Sharon
