ENT perscribed Nasonex. Anyone use it?

Went to the ENT to ask about my constant coughing and feeling of difficult breathing. The only problem he could find was a chronic stuffed nose that is probably causing a lot of post nasal drip. He gave me some samples of Nasonex to try. (if this doesn't work, he suggested that it might be my stomach)

I looked the Nasonex up online and didn't find too many side effects. Just wondered if anyone here used it. Any successes? Does it dry things out too much?

I used it years ago for allergies/stuffy nose and it did help.  I had to stop using it per my opthomologist, because of high eye pressure and the start of a small cataract in 1 eye (it is a steroid but just effects things locally- my optho was concerned because of the close proximity to my eye).

Hi Deb

I use it as well and find it very helpful,I don't suffer any ill effects from it . Great for the sinuses.

I use this and it has helped me with my chronic sinus infections. I too would develop a terrible cough, sometimes unable to even catch my breath. I thought it was something with my lungs but my lungs always sounded fine. After my doctor prescribed the Nasonex and when I use it regularly my sinuses feel SO much better. Plus it keeps the inflammation at bay so then I do not have as much nasal drip that builds up and makes me cough.

I have had no side effects from it at all, my doctor said that it is best to use it everyday rather than wait until I am sick and then it takes it longer to work. So far I have had success with it, as long as I do use it everyday.

Hope it helps you too!

I have used it before. I switched to it because other kinds dried me out & gave me a bloody nose. I didn't have problems with nasonex.

Good luck, Carie

Hi  :)

i've used Nasonex regularly and found it helpful. Post nasal drip was becoming a big problem - waking me up at night and causing me to choke and gag.
I've recently been switched to another medication because there seem to be Nasonex supply problems in the area I llive in.

I would say it is worth a try. Good luck!

Take care - Scottie  :)

I use to, until the ENT took a careful look up my nostrils and said the Sjogren's had made the membrane so dry and paper thin that it was about to perforate.

She told me I should never use steroid sprays because of it. :-\

Dear Deb,

I've used Nasonex for years.  Without it my post nasal drip plugs up my breathing and then I breathe through my mouth which is horrible, especially at night.

It takes a few weeks to kick in, so give it time.

I use a nasal saline spray first to clear a pathway, then the Nasonex.

As with any medication, it works for some, not so well for others, and might not be right at all for some.

For me it is really essential to my well being.   It is expensive for me, even with drug coverage, however.

Keep us posted, Deb.

I would definitely do sinus rinses and later on use the Nasonex. Reason being if your nasal passages are way too dry, you can get a nose bleed - though not a bad one.
The sinus rinses have done the best for me in reducing the number of and severity of any sinus or throat infection I get. Nasonex just helps open up the nasal passages - I think?

I used Nasonex and loved the results . . . until I started having severe nose bleeds every day.  My doctor took me off it and now I just have to rely on Saline.  I'm glad it works for you!!

It is always interesting to hear how everyone reacts differently to different medications. It always helps me so much to hear from other people.

The way my doctor explained Nasonex to me is that it is similar to the Asthma medication that my son takes, Flovent. Both are corticosteroids. It will keep the inflammation down as I have chronic inflammatory sinus disease. For me and my symptoms it has helped tremendously. My doctor prefers that I am on Nasonex rather than having to go on antibotics when I get really, really bad.

I am sure it is not for everyone or maybe not long, long term for me but it has certainly helped me up to this point. Will be on the look out for some of the effects that others have listed though but for right now I am great with it :)

I've used Nasonex daily for about 7 years. I had had difficult to control asthma prior to that, but along with Nasonaex and a couple of inhalers, my asthma and allergies are well controlled.

I do have a bloody nose sometimes, but I thik I blow it too hard when I first get up. Using a saline gel, is helping though.

Good luck with the Nasonex.

This all sounds so promising! Thanks for sharing. I took my first dose tonight. Can't really tell if it's working yet, but several of you said it takes a couple weeks so I'll be patient. I do have a rather nasty headache, but I'm not going to fret about it. Thanks again! I'll keep my fingers crossed for success!

I use Nasonex/generic daily. It doesn't help allergies in obvious ways, but without it I would have multiple sinus infections every year. I do use Claritin/generic and chlorpheniramine maleate 4 hr to control springtime and fall allergies. Both are terribly drying; I try to use Claritin in the morning, chlorpheniramine maleate if I forgot the Claritin, and it's later in the day.
