The dog asked to go out at 4:00 this morning, so I let her out (already exhausted), and she comes in absolutely reeking!  It took me a couple of seconds to figure out she had been sprayed by a skunk, so she was in the house for about 10 seconds, long enough for the smell to permeate throughout each and every room!

One thing's for certain - this Sjogren's hasn't affected my smelling!  Hoo, boy!!!!!

Ohiocat

so what is the solution for skunk?   i don't remember,  but does it something to do with tomato juice or tomato soup?
female 50+, no thyroid - levthyroxin 125mcg; Primary Sjogrens:  Dry mouth; Dry eyes-thera tears, Restasis twice daily;

Well, we did the tomato juice thing but it didn't really help.  Some people are saying mix peroxide with baking soda and dish soap to make a paste, so we're going to try that tonight (since she still stinks!).  For the house in general, I think we just have to let it dissipate over time...

Oooh, I've not had that pleasure of my dog finding a skunk, but my in-laws did.  It seems to take forever to get rid of that smell.  I'll try to remember to ask what their remedy was that worked.

Meanwhile, can you open some windows, or is it too hot??  :P

amberjolie1

Yes, we've had a number of windows open and fans running through the house.  Sprayed with febreeze, used other air fresheners, and so on.  I think ultimately the smell has to go away on its own, but although you can smell skunk as soon as you walk in the door, it's not a smack-you-in-the-face I-can't-believe-a-skunk-can-make-that-smell kind of smell, but an, oh, do you have a skunk living under your house? type of smell.  So we're progressing.  :D

Meld256

Well, that IS a progressive improvement!  Your description is delightful... ;D  Good luck!

Just for some humor it could be worse!

My dad used to have a phrase when something smelt really really bad - He'd say it smells worse than a dead skunk under a chicken house.  You don't have chickens do you?  ;)

SKUNK!

I leave catfood outdoors at night so we can watch the wildlife -- opossums, raccoons -- and last night, a skunk.

Who sprayed.

Inside the carport.

A lot.

Surely it stinketh!

Any ideas? We don't think soaking with a hose will do anything but spread the stench around.

I just went into my purse to get my wallet for lunch. When I opened it up, OMG! The smell of skunk IS INSIDE MY PURSE!

I wonder if my clothes also stink.....

Wow our dog (or sons dog) just had the same thing. We took her to get professionally cleaned yesterday. The groomer said never add water to the mix, it allows the spray to seep into skin and will take 2 months to wear off. Said only pets smart keeps on had a dry shampoo to remove skunk spray. We now own 2 bottles cuz the smell really effects me (and the couch, rugs etc..)
Thought that would help.

Our son lives nearby and their black lab has gotten sprayed 2 times in the last 3 weeks. She had a bath the same day the first time and within the first 2-3 days the second time.

They just took her into the back shop and gave her another bath last weekend cause she was still smelling pretty bad. When the weather gets like this the skunks are always on the prowl. That old dog food in a dish will draw the skunks and coons every time.

Years ago our son and wife had 2 Siberian huskys in a big fenced in area out under a small grove of trees. One year there must have been a population explosion of coon as the "road kill" was humongous and the darn coons came every night to eat the dog food waking son and kids up.

Our son shot 9 coon that fall. They have not been that bad since. I think the old time farmers and country folks shot a lot of coon that fall. It is scary when they get too friendly. When the kids are older and outside with their bikes, motorcycles and later snowmobiles, etc after dark I was always afraid that these critters might attack them. Irish ;D
