Skylar

Yes, I used to. OMG it used to be so embarrassing if it happened out in public. Even drinking water could set it off. I never could figure out a specific consistent trigger.

Still in the hunt

I had to stop going out to eat becasue of these glands,, oh heck I cant even eat at home now,, and i;m tired of having to struggle to get anyone to do anything about anything, I;mnot asking for much,, al I get is we;ll see you in amonth,, ok

I did not know if this was something others in here had a problem with. does anyone know why we gag so easily? What glands are you talking about Still the Hunt? I don't know of any gland problems that I have.
I saw my Rheumy today and was gonna ask him about it, along with some other things, but my back started hurting last night. So bad that when I mentioned it, he was immediatly all about my back. And the pain was so bad, I was definatly happy he was tryig to help me. Next thing I know, he gave me a shot, wrote a perscription then was out the door. I didn't get to ask the other questions..
So if any one can explain this gagging stuff to me, I would appreciate it.

I am wondering if many of you have so much swelling of the mucus membranes and tissue in the throat that the little thingy hanging down (uvula) touches a trigger area that sets off the gagging reflex.

Did you know that you can control your gag reflex??? I had a gastroscopy without any anesthesia and it just floored the doc. Well, I was determined to do it as I had a doc appt in a couple of hours and I didn't want to be stoned.

What you have to do it when the gag starts you stop it, and stop it again, and again, etc. The more it happens and the more you stop it you will finally become really good at controlling this bugger.

Also, the deep breathing in and out slowly while you are concentrating on controlling the gag works wonderfully. I seldom gag and never have done it much ---just the way I am.  Try to learn just what triggers the gag and try to change things or avoid the trigger.

Sometimes this can be caused by a neuropathy or one little nerve that is irritable in the back of the throat. I know a lot of you think I am more than crazy, but there are many bodily functions that can be controlled by the deep breathing and relaxing.

Think of all the times they ask you to take a deep breath in the docs office before they take your blood pressure. When you do that and breathe out and just flow with it and let your body relax you can almost feel your blood vessels relaxing. Irish ;D

Usually the breathing does help. But lately the gagging has been happening more and more, and the breathing does not work right away. I do keep trying it though. I agree that a lot of things can be controlled if we stay calm and relax, breathe etc.

I don't gag, exactly, but I do get choked really easily. Sometimes on food - especially if I'm not paying attention while I'm eating - but sometimes on my own saliva when I'm chewing a new piece of gum. I guess my mouth doesn't know what to do!

If people are gagging a lot and have trouble sorting out any specific cause it is wise to ask the doc if it is possible that you are having problems with the muscles used in swallowing.

Many times nausea is involved with gagging and that needs to be addressed from another level by your doctor. If you are having a swallowing problem that is causing the food to back up and choked on then gagging will occur.

Ask the doc about having a swallowing video cause the swallowing issues generally show up. Good luck to all of you. Irish ;D
