Burning muscles/joints after physiotherapy

Hi

I know this will probably have been dealt with previously, but I would really appreciate your thoughts.

About a month ago, I started seeing a very understanding physiotherapist at the hospital. She worked out that the muscles from my buttocks down to below my thighs are not working as they should, hence my trouble with climbing stairs/walking any distance. So, I have been doing some muscle strengthening/stretching exercises most days. However, my muscles and joints are now burning all the time.

My question is, should I continue trying to do the exercizes every day, stop doing them until after I see the physio again on Wednesday, or do some of them?

Thanks

Hi Kathyx,

My physiotherapist always told me "If it hurts, stop doing it.  It should never hurt."   Do you think that applies to your situation?
Sjogren's syndrome, RA,  Raynaud's phenomenon, Celiac Disease, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Grave's Disease, Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis, Osteopenia, Cervical Stenosis

Gabapentin, Methotrexate, Synthroid, Dexilant, Domperidone, Metronidazole, Pennsaid, folic acid.

Hi,

You need to call your PT and let her know what is going on.  More than likely you will need to go a little more slowly and gradually build up.  Exercises shouldn't be that painful, if it is, your body is telling you to ease up a little.  I always tell my patients if an exercise causes pain that lasts more than 24 hours that they over did it and need to reduce reps or resistance by about a third, don't progress until you can do that level easily.  Talk to your PT, you can call if you don't have an appt coming up soon.

Thank you for your suggestions. In fact, even doing them slowly with a break in between, the exercizes only take about 20 minutes. However, my lazy body still thinks that's too much.

I hadn't done any for about 48 hours, so this evening just did about 5 minutes worth. I'll see how it goes. I'm seeing the physio again on Wednesday, so I'll let you know what she says.

I really value your comments.

Hi Kathy

Hope you are doing better today.  I just wanted to say, your body is NOT lazy, it is constantly battling inflammation, that is why it is so hard to build up your activity tolerance, you have to take it slowly so you don't increase the inflammation.  Treat and think of your body with gentleness!  Hope things get easier for you.

Kathy dear - just to echo Nancy's kind and wise words ... your body is NOT lazy, and nor are you.

This sounds like classic inflammatory pain.  I get that sort of burning just trundling around the apartment with my trusty walker, let alone doing any exercises!

Maybe 5 minutes each day is the way to start; then 5 minutes twice a day ... Little and (not so) often rather than long workouts?

Let us know what the physio says on Wednesday.

Thankyou very much for your kind and rassuring words. I saw the physio today and the reason Ihurt is that I've beendoing some of the eercizes wrong :-[ She showed me the right way to do them and said I could go down to as few as three repititions of each. We also had some discussion about my balance problems and my task for the next couple of weeks is to practice balancing on one of those big inflatable gym balls. We are actually going on a Med cruise next week, so I guess I will suss the gym out on the ship, and do a few minutes in there each day. I will also be able to swim in the sea - one of my very favourite pastimes!

I'm determined to do my best with this physio, as even I am shocked at how weak and wobbly I've become in the last year or so. I will take your advice onboard though, every little helps and try not to walk before I can run ;)

Hugs

Kathy dear - so good to hear that the physio was able to help.

How wonderful that you're going on a cruise in the Mediterranean!  We've had such wonderful weather these past few days in England, so I'm sure you'll be taking it with you there.  Which part of the Med will you be exploring?  And you'll get to swim in the sea!

Hope you have a great time.  Looking forward to hearing all about it.

Hi Chickpea

Thank you! We just arrived back today. We visited Slovenia, Croatia and three Italian ports. The cruise was really good - and so was the weather, apart from Venice, where it rained all day and was very cold.

Exercise wise, I did some in the cabin, and just did stretches in the hot tub, but I did walk a little further than usual too, so it all adds up.

I feel so lucky to have been on such a wonderful trip, and wish you could have come too.

Hugs

Hi Kathy

That all sounds wonderful!  I wish I could have come too!!  The only large boat I've been on recently was a ferry across the Irish Sea and there were no hot tubs, and the weather was horrid.

Hope you had a restful weekend to recover and that your new working week is easier to cope with.
