Ok, I have to ask....does someone crunching normal or at least with their mouth closed, still make you cringe and want to run away?! I have such intollerance to noise! Also, my hearing is getting worse...maybe I wont have to hear the crunching! Lol it makes me nauseated! My tv is always blaring to drown out the sounds!

Smells can also make me puke!

I can definitely relate. For me it was high pitched or loud sounds like sirens. Those would make me so nauseous. In fact, for awhile I couldn't stand eating in a large, busy restaurant as my nausea was just too much for me to enjoy the meal. Eventually I started carrying around some earplugs with me to large restaurants and those helped to avoid the nausea somewhat. It was sometimes awkward during family meals when my aunt would be trying to talk to me and I was totally oblivious to what she was saying. I'd have to then explain why I was wearing earplugs..and the story of AI would become a long winded explanation...etc..etc. Hang in there. I can happily say my sensitivity to sounds seems to be diminishing.

I suffer from this a lot but it is related to my migraines, I cannot stand noises, lights of the Tv flashing, smells of perfume and food etc.
Quite annoying, but I think the headaches are improving with the Depakote now.:)

Hi Sha,

I can also relate.
Munching, crunching, scratching, nibbling at nails ALL MAKE MY HAIR STAND ON END !!  >:( >:(
Also can't use the toilet if someone has been there right before me. I have to wait at least 10 minutes.

I put it down to me becoming a horrible intolerant person (and started feeling guilty for it) --- never knew it was associated with Sjogrens?

Yeh, I though I was just getting older (35), and becoming intollerant, too! I have stuck papertowels in my ears when dh is eating machos...does no good saying anything cuz it's me, not him! Try being the block mom, kid friendly house with noise quirks!;)

My tv blares to drown out the offending noise! Once I start thinking about it bothering me...it seems to amplify the crunching!:p

...  And here I thought I was just being over sensitive to these things.     They DRIVE ME nuts !!!!!!!

Hi Sha,

So what could be causing this?
Are our ears becoming so dry they amplify sounds???
Our noses so dry they amplify scents???

The only partner friendly solution I have thus far worked out, when munching, crunching, scratching, nibbling occurs:
a) mutter something like "...... ooooops, I urgently need the toilet..." and leave the room.
b) turn up the stereo !
c) put on ear phones and call someone on Skype
d) crunch back!! as loud as you can
e) if all if this doesn't work, threaten with the mother-in-law...

;D ;D ;D

I researched this awhile back when I was having really bad episodes of nausea from noises like ticking clocks and birds chirping and have come up with a possible explanation. The condition is called Hyperacusis as described here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperacusis. Interestingly enough one of the main causes of hyperacusis is Meniere's disease which sometimes accompanies sjogren's as well as a host of other autoimmune conditions. I have had some bad tinnitus in the past so it makes sense for me that this may be the cause.
