Following my worrying weakness in the swimming pool on my last holiday, I'm seriously considering some kind of buoyance aid for our next holiday - and for when I'm in the sea. I have been able to swim very well since I was a child, so this feels a bit like a failure, but I need to be safe. My hubby will go in the sea with me, so I'm not likely to get washed away ;) An one else had to do this? Any suggestions of what to get?

Hi Kathy

As a non-swimmer I can totally sympathise with this request!  It does feel embarrassing but there are all sorts of things you can try that look sort of 'normal'.  My first thought was a ball, so you can look as though you're exercising or playing with it.  It will also help you stay afloat.  Then there are those small boards which you can hold under your tummy if you don't want it to be too obvious, or in front of you if you don't mind people seeing it.

What about a different sort of swimsuit that offers some buoyancy itself?  I was thinking of a shorty neoprene wet suit or something like that.  They come in all sorts of snazzy colours!

How's the holiday packing going?  You must be very excited by now!

Hi Kathy - when we were away last summer, the pool had a few of those bendy foam tubes that I had first seen at a water aerobics class way back when I had time and energy to do more than just work and family!  I wrapped one round my back and under my arms, resting my arms on each end and found I could virtually fall asleep like that!  It was so relaxing and my body had no complaints at all!!  For the 1st time in ages I was not aware of a single twinge, anywhere.

I know they sell them at the gym (don't go there any more either :'() but you might be able to get them at a large sports store.

You must be getting excited about your hols now - hope you have an amazing time!  XX Ailsa

Hi Giuys

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I don't think I have the figure for a wetsuit, but I think one of those foam things would be a good idea, that way I would be supported, but not look out of place.

You know, I'm so impressed. Whenever I have had a question, I'm always given a choice of answers. Where else could Imeet such knowledgeable people?

A wetsuit does wonders, and you can get them in all shapes, colors, and sizes. Try a 3 mm shorty; you can pick them up at Costco (in beach areas) or WalMart.

Thank you Marmote.

We don't have Walmart in the UK, but I will look around, if we have time, between landing at the airport and boarding the ship.
