Title: Do those of you with high blood pressure have problems taking prednisone?
Post by: tomsmom on July 14, 2009, 12:36:28 PM
It's great to be able to come here for advice.  Thank you for taking time from your own troubles to help others like me.
I'm considering starting a low dose one week run of Prednisone to see if it helps this flare.  I have had bp issues for the last 5 years. I'm only 29 but I have heredity to thank for it.  It's really well controlled on my Toprol XL.  I just don't want to rock the boat and cause myself yet ANOTHER problem.  It was really high after I had my last son for a few months but has been good for the last five months or so.  On a low dose, have those of you with blood pressure problems had any issues with Prednisone?  I have an event to attend with my husband next Friday and I don't want to let him down.  But I can't go like this.  I can hardly hold myself up these days.  Maybe in combination with the Plaquenil I can get off this couch.  Thanks for any advice.

Hi Tomsmom  :)

I'm afraid I can't answer your question because I don't have high blood pressure and I've never been on pred but I'm sure somebody will have an experience to share with you.

I think that its a question for your doctor really though. Presumeably prednisone would have to be prescribed and your doc knows about your blood pressure issue. It would be foolhardy of a doctor to prescribe something that wouldn't mix with medications you are already taking or exacerbate an existing condition. I'd put your mind at rest and ask a medic though.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Scotties totally right, I'd run this past your doctor to be sure.

That being said, I have high BP and take Lopressor and Lisinopril to control it. I've been on Pred since March and it hasn't effected by bp. Realize I'm on a relatively low dose (20-15 mgs) but that my experience.

I do fine that the Pred is a very helpful drug, even with all the scary side effects.

Hope you feel better.

Hi, tomsmom.  I am on Quinipril 5mg for BP and started Medrol 4mg (prednisolone) in March.  My BP remained well in control.  Hope that helps....

Hi! Everyone is different. I do have High blod pressure and have been treated for it for 2 years. In January I was put on Prednisone and my blood pressure went higher. I had to be switched to a stronger BP med while on Prednisone. I don't think that happens to everyone but it did to me.

Hope that helps.
