Hello friends,
I was advised to have a Lip Biopsy because of negative bloodwork. Does anyone have a Dr. in PA around Philly area that has performed a Lip Biopsy that did not leave prolonged numbness?? Or should I say did a good job?!?!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
deb
Deb,
I posted a reply about the lip biopsy in the "Dr. Birnbaum" thread. If you are going to see Dr. Birnbaum, in person, then you might want to consider having the lip biopsy done at Hopkins. The dermatologist that did mine at Hopkins was Dr. Mary Sheu. However, you will need a doctor to initiate the appointment. You're local doctor would have to request the appointment/test (or Dr. Birnbaum).
Otherwise, I would suggest calling your local dermatologists and asking lots of questions.
Best,
Anita
Hi Deb,
An ENT did my lip biopsy. The important thing to remember is to make sure that the person doing the procedure has done MANY of these lip biopsies and that the lab reading it has read MANY of the specimens taken.
By going to a larger hospital or university medical center you have a better chance of that being the case!
Good luck to you!
DO NOT go to a ENT affiliated with any small town hospital, chances are they have done litle or no Lip biopsys,, go with the larger hospital or universtiy hospitals,, I had mine done at the Univ of Pittsburgh medical center, and although the ENT that did mine is really good and has done plenty of them,, I must admit to some residual numbness in the lower lip left side,, matches the numbness I now have on the outside of my left foot from the sural nerve biopsy done last week,, never ends
Thank you both! I was just looking in to the University of Penn's Sjogren's Syndrome Center to see who does them there. Haven't gotten a name yet.

Hey Deb,
I live in Philadelphia, and my Rheumatologist is at U of Penn. She had recommend me to see a doctor by the name Kim Abboud who's at U of Penn in the Otolaryngology department. I haven't done it yet because I'm still awaiting my Salivary Scan results. However, this doctor is supposed to be excellent, hence the reason why she gave me her information. Anyway, I hope that was helpful and I wish you luck!
Great, thanks!
