Title: Crushing Fatigue
Post by: ohiolady on June 08, 2009, 03:40:24 PM
I've had crushing fatigue for the last few weeks.  I have Hashimotos Thyroiditis but thus far my thyroid has not failed.  I'm wondering if this would be a primary symptom of a failing thyroid.  I can't describle how awful the fatigue is.  I know that it may be Sjogrens but it is pretty awful.  I'm due to go next week for endocrinology appt.

Thanks for any insight.

Anna,

I have had my thyroid checked and rechecked and double checked, done the endocrinologist thing too, thyroid normal.  Now there saying that my fatigue is due to an abnormal sleep study results and need to see a phulmanologist.  Just when I think there are no more ologist to see, bang, here comes another one.

My fatigue is at a point where I can no longer function, but I don't think the doctors understand what we are going through and only did the sleep study so one more thing can be eliminated as the cause.  Now that I have to go to the hospital next week for another procedure I will have to put the brakes on this dx for a while, so please let me know what you find.

Epson,

I will let you know.  I've been trying to describe to my husband how severe the fatigue has been.  I've grown used to the low level energy, pacing yourself ect. but this is different.  I sure hope this passes for both of us.  Wouldn't you just love a boring life, I know I would!!!!!

Anna,

I don't think doctors understand how debilitating this fatigue is.  I don't even feel like I'm alive anymore, today I spent most of the day asleep. I'm so tired that I feel like I might pass out.

Hello, Have you talked to your rheumy about CFS (Chronic Fatique Syndrome)? I have that also and it will take you down hard! Sometimes i sleep 20hrs out of the day when it is really flared! I was diagnosed 25 years ago and dealt with it pretty well until the last 18 mos when my Sjs, and fibro kicked in real good! Sometimes it takes months for you to get any relief. I know of nothing myself to help with it but do talk to your reumy about this possibility. I wish you both better days and let us know what you find out ??? I know it's terrifying to be so exhausted all the time.

For me this was the single most frustrating symptom.  No one knows what you mean when you say you are tired.  My husband, my parents, my coworkers.  How could they?  I thought it was "normal" for years & years until it got so bad that I could no longer explain it away.  It's not something you can really put in words.  The best explanation I could ever give verbally is when I explained that I literally would fantasize about sleep more than anything.  My husband would say he'd bring the baby somewhere on a Saturday night a few weeks in the future & I would literally get excited & imagine I was going to get home from work & sleep for 14 hours.  (Which is really silly because it was unlikely it would make me feel any better.)  If it fell thru I would be crushed almost to tears.

I think the fatigue we go through is the worse thing Sjs can throw at us.  It is the most overwhelming tiredness I have ever experienced.  When it hits, it's either lay down, sit down or fall down where you stand.  I've had it hit me in the yard where I couldn't even make it to the back door.  I just literally sat in the grass because I couldn't move any further.

Being tired is one thing, but this being TIRED is a whole other thing entirely :(.

Take care all and know that you are not alone with this insidious disease.

Hugs, Pooh

Thanks for your replies.  I've found myself wishing it was my thyroid so I could take some medicine and it would go away.

Will be thinking about you.  Know exactly how you feel.   Never have been able to fully explain it to anyone.  However, I have a supportive husband and that is nice.  He is my shining star and I am blessed.  Hang in there.  Hugs. Redetha

I too have Hashimotos. It is a real pain. My fatigue is so bad, sometimes I can't walk across my house. I also have Fibromyalgia and that causes a lot of fatigue. The only advice I can give you is to go to bed. Get rest when you need it. You will run yourself into the ground. I hope you do well. I know if feels like you are on a tightrope everyday.

Hashimoto's certainly CAN cause horrendous fatigue - also depression and it can go from being OK to pretty wrong within a matter of weeks as well.

Take care - Scottie  :)
