My son is now out of hospital, having been dxd with ulcerative colitis. He sent me and his siblings a long email. He doesn't like steroids because they make him feel really jittery and I'm not sure he likes his bland diet either but I know he'll do what he needs to. I think he's planning on going back to work next week so they must have things under control. Apparently he needed a blood transfusion when he was in hospital because of some blood count or other. I know he had diarrhoea but he wasn't losing blood so I don't know what that was about.

Thanks Scottie for the update. I was wondering how he was doing. Well, now that he had that transfusion, he's definitely part American now. :D
I hope he can stick to that diet and stay well. Going back to work will be a big step, I hope he doesn't overdo.

So nice to hear that your son is out of the hospital. Sounds like they are going to get him on a treatment plan so he can keep his symptoms under control. Good thing steroids aren't the only thing as I think they have some pretty good meds out there to get a handle on UC. Thanks for keeping us updated. :)
Thanks for letting us know how your son is doing Scottie...I'm glad that he is back at home and has some answers...now on to a good treatment plan so he can get his life back to "normal" ( I always use that term loosely...lol).
Now you can breathe right again, knowing your son is improving a little more each day!

You and your son have been in my thoughts and it's good to know that he has a diagnosis. No diagnosis is welcome but maybe this one is something he can hopefully come to terms with and live alongside. How does he deal with pain and stress in general? Does he have good coping strategies?
Let us know when you've had the opportunity to chat with him and find out how he's feeling in himself.

Scottie so glad your son is on the mend. If he is anything like his Mom he will be able to adjust to his UC. He may not like it but he will do what is necessary to stay on the feeling good side of life. Just keep sending him your love and letting him know he can handle that new diet when he gripes.

You must be glad he is out of hospital and doing well, not great having any diagnosis, but better than not knowing what is wrong.
many crohns and UC ppl have aneamia at point of diagnosis and some depending on severity do have to take iron for them on, while someone may not have a big bleed, the inflammed bowel and diahorrea can mean that they have lost a small amount, not enough to be visible , amount of blood daily, by time its picked up their lelvels of haemoglogin are low, so to quickly sort that they transfuse and send them home with iron tablets, often over years we have used a little test kit for what we call faecal occult blood, amazing how something can look normal, but when you test yup blood is present in the stool.
So worry not its not some kind of secondary condition theyve not DX almost of UC or crohns have anaemia, till it gets fixed out
