Title: sjogrens and the flu shot
Post by: tmarie0183 on May 16, 2009, 03:43:13 PM
Just a thought...
Has anyone gotten sick from the flu shot and/or do you get it yearly??

I have often wondered, and would love to hear if anyone had the same thing happen (although chances are it is unrelated), but ...

Many, many years ago I needed to have a tetanus shot.  Around the same time, I was often getting bronchitis and so the doctor recommended a flu shot.  I went to see the nurse and I was given both shots the same day, in the same arm.

That evening my arm felt like lead.  But I understand the tetanus shot does this to you.

This is the point where I started to have bodily pains.  I realise, now, that my dry eyes have been there since I was a teenager (49 yrs now), but this was the time when my arm never really got better and I was diagnosed RA, although blood tests were negative.

Sorry, I realise that wasn't what you were asking, but it made me remember this.

Jenna got the flu shot for the first time this year and actually got the flu 5 days later and so did all of us.  I dont believe in them but she had to have them for school.

Hi, I  have had my flu jab every year, for years now , and I have never had any ill effect's.

Any one who is allergenic may suffer a reaction, so should tell the Doc ..

Otherwise I would say  that we should have it,  since our immune systems are not as co operative as we would like !!
              Regards Dolly.

I have had the flu shot for the last 5 or 6 years, and never had a bad reaction. I have asthma and bronchiectasis, so consider it essential.

Well, I am another who gets one, but wouldn't if it didn't keep our insurance price down a little. The first year it did make my arm feel like lead for almost a week, but I was already ill at that point. The last couple years it hasn't bothered me.

I don't usually bother because I've only had the flu once (in 7th grade), but I did this year b/c I'm teaching at a school that requires me to shake each student's hand as he/she enters my room.  It's nice, but a bit germy as I can't exactly rush out to wash my hands when I need to start the class.

I didn't have any problems.

Never get it because of my history having Guillain Barre Syndrome.

Yes, I get a flu shot each year on my Internist's urging.  He says that since I have a compromised immune system due to SJS, then I need it.  I do not have problems afterwards.

Interesting, but my husband, who is not a Sjoggie, always gets sick for 48 hrs after the flue shot.

This last year, I also got a pneumonia shot with no ill effects.

I was just wondering because every year that I get the flu shot I am SO sick all winter long, and every year that I don't get it I barely get sick.  I don't know if it's just coincidence or if it was related in any way to the Sjogrens.  I'm a nurse and they advise strongly on getting it, but I refuse because I always get sick with it.  Just wondering if anyone else had same situation.  Thanks :)

I get the flu shot every year and have for 10+ years (before the sjogren's diagnosis). I've never had any problems with the shot and haven't had the flu since  I began getting them. I had a tetanus shot 2 years ago and a pneumonia shot last year.  I didn't have any adverse reactions to them either.
