tonight will be the first shift i ll have done in 8 months, i was told id not nurse again, but then im not one for doing what im told lol.
Im excited to get back, and kind of nervous , been a long time sinc ei was on my feet all night on an 11 hour night duty, im being phased in, i have annual leave built up so im going back one night a week for 5 weeks, then back to my usual 2 nights a week, those who pray say a quick one for me it will be a quiter shift and break me in gently, ive worked care of the eldery 20 years, and this current post 8 in elderly /terminal care....
its a job i love, get more from it as ill ever put in, i cant say how much i missed the patients, and it always keeps my head straight, ppl there so much more worse off in health than i ll ever be ,looking forward to getting my usual hugs, part of me knows that a few i ll have nursed a while will have passed away, and while we try to remain deteched, you never master that art when you care, so im bracing myself for that too, wish me luck :)

I hope that it went well for you. Would they listen to the rational of a partial shift?
Wednesday, Congradulations on going back to work. I hope things work out for you. Your in our thoughts and prayers. Lots of love Jonnell and Jenna
I'm so happy for you. I know you've made enormous strides lately. I dare say I'm also starting to feel the effects of the meds and I definitely have less brain fog. Wishing you all the best!
McT,
Best wishes as you return to the job you love. That's nice that you can gradually work into your regular 2-night shift.
I'm sure the patients will be happy to see you again. ;D
You're right, some of the ones you cared for before will no longer be there when you return. When you are around these patients all the time and invest a part of you into their care you can't help but feel the pain of grieving them when they pass on. Sending hugs your way to help you thru tonight.
Hoping your first night back is uneventful and quiet. :)
Take care Mc T,
Bucky
thnakyou all so much, shift will start tonight, so 5 1/2 hours to d day lol
joe i understand that partial shifts would be great, but childcare , redeployment and as i dont drive travel would make the benefits outweigh the gain im afraid, this way there are quiet times on shift, an hour break md shift to relax, and far less travel, plus i can work my childcare round it by the kids going to their dads and being in school when i come home and sleep :)

Good luck Wed, hope you can get your schedule back to the way you want it... ;D
Hope it goes well T - you're bound to be nervous and watching the clock till it's time to go to work but I bet once you're there you will feel like you've never been away! I'm sure they will all welcome you back. Let us know how it goes once you've slept again xx Ailsa
Good luck!!
xx

Hi Wed McT
I'm so excited for you! I know you've wanted this for so long, and it's clear how much the patients mean to you.
We need all the nurses like you that we can get - so bless you for using the bit of energy you've got to help make the world a better place.
Thinking of you tonight - Chickpea
McT,
So glad to hear you are returning to your hearts desires in nursing our elders. They will be so blessed with any amount of time you give them with your unique caring skills. The world truly is a better place with great nurses at work.
Prayers and hugs, May you feel energy and joy in serving and may you keep a sense of your limits and not over do it. I also pray for light work load in your beginnings.
kimbo
Wednesday, I, too, feel good vibes about your working tonight. I miss working very much, but I'm of retirement age anyhow. I do volunteer one afternoon a week at an aviation museum and it's great to talk with the public again.

Tis me
Thankyou all SO juch for your thoughts and prayers, they worked!! was quiestest shift ive had in a long time we hold 25 patients, we only had 18! so good vibes were right!!
I cant say how much i enjoyed it, and felt like id never been away after a couple of hours :)
Typical example of my strange insanity on duty, we have a right character of a wee lady, kept shouting at me and saying im 80 you know, other staff said she is a nightmare, me being me said well your tongues 20 lol, anymore carrry on i ll tickle you, even she laughed and said oh ive not been tickled in years!! i said well lets put that right and tickled her, she was laughing like a child!!
she gave me the biggest smile and rubbed my face, then said i dont like you you know, i said thats fine honey they ll still pay me ;) she giggled again and asked when i ll be back on......staff were gobsmacked and said all in the approach girls, under the hardest facde lies someone needing loved.staff said good to have you back, i said blooming good to be back!!

GREAAAAT Mc T
So good to hear everything went so well.
You went out and blessed your world at work.
It is so true , people are always eager to receive love.
kimbo
Great to hear you had a quiet shift 1st up.
Sounds like you sure brightened one dear old lady's night with your humour
Good on you. Guess soon you'll feel like you've not been away.
Take care & catch up on the 40 winks you've missed!

That's great news! What a wonderful person and caring soul.
I am glad that it went good last night. I am green with envy i loved working but I know I can not any more.
McT
Wonderful! I bet that old lady couldn't believe her luck at being given some individual attention. I bet it was food for thought for your colleagues too ;)
Kathyx
That's great that your first night back was like that. So glad you enjoyed it.
Take care - Scottie :)
McT,
I'm glad you had a quiet night on your first night back to work.
I bet you made your wee ladies night! ;D My mother was in a nursing home for a short while and she got along great with the nurses who would tease her, crack jokes or make her laugh. It helps to brighten their day. Something as simple as combing their hair makes them feel special. We all like to feel special. :D
Good job McT. I'm sure your employer is happy you are back too. ;D
Bucky
aww cheers all
bucky my ward sister who is known to be pretty hardline gave me a hug when i openned the doors to her this morning lol .
Bucky exactly !!
aint it the truth its the little things, like getting your hair combed, eye care, some time spent a wee extra cup of tea and a giggle that makes being stuck in a bed a little easier to take, not hard things, just simple moments that help, One of our ladies couldnt sleep, i missed her alot, always been one of my favs, very forthright woman , whose not had an easy life, spent time asking her how her rash had been and catching up with her, she asked me why id been off and i told her, and we spent time comparing notes lol, i think though ive always cared, now i truly know what its like to be ill, and in a way im grateful that that expereince makes me as a nurse all the more vigilant , spent alot of time last night asking ppl if they needed a drink and was their mouth dry ??lololololol well some good comes from everything :)
T x
McT,
Ok dear . . take it easy and don't drown the patients with water!! LOL Since I carry a water bottle with me at all times I just think . ." aren't you thirsty?" - thinking everybody MUST need some water. LOL
My MIL used to always say "I could spit cotton!" . . . I know exactly what she means now!! ;D (that is, IF I could spit!!) ;)
Take care McT,
Bucky
Oh T -if I ever need nursing care when I'm older, I so much hope there is someone like you there. However, I feel you are probably totally unique! I'm so glad it went well for you, but I'm sure there are so many people who are just as glad because you are back on the shift. Well done, you xx Ailsa

Hey you,
Good luck but mostly I'm ecstatic that you are doing so well. I love the fact that it's because you are healing yourself through diet. It gives me confirmation that I too am on the right path. Keep up the good work !
j
bucky lololol@drown them, i ll watch out for that lol.
harrigan....oh ive met a few like me over the years , thankfully, usually auxillary nurses with little knowledge and alot of heart, the mistake theyve made i think was thinking a good nurse was a degree holder, sadly very wrong, a good nurse is somone who cares with a sens eof humour :) but thanks :)
J aye there is alot to be said for it , i can honestly say, it pays off in the end, not easy, but i think the benefits outweigh the sacrifice, keep on the path *hug*

Great to hear that you got back to work and that you had a good night. I bet your duty shoes were a little stiff when you put them on. 8)
You are so lucky to be able to go back. I have kept my nursing license up the last 6 years and have hoped that I would be able to do some type of nursing even if short hour days managing charts. Just to be back in the medical world. It is something that grows on you. I worked 25 years in long term care nursing and even when I was a charge nurse I loved to get out on the floor and work with the patients. So many people need hugs and attention.
I mentioned to my immunologist that I would like to be able to work a few hours a week in nursing. He looked at me and said "there are a lot of sick people in hospitals and nursing homes". In other words he was telling me that with my low t-cells I would not be working again. Darn. I may be 66 but I know (like you) that after being ill I would be a much better nurse.
Hope all goes well for you. Make sure you get your sleep and don't skip sleeping after working. I know how that goes. Work a night shift and when you work part time you think you can skip your sleep. It catches up with you. Irish ;D
confused thankyou so much for your kind wors, but i think i was glader than anyone lol.
irish
i completely understand that desire, and i can imagine the pain of not being able to do so.
isnt it strange that need? yup it grows on you till its a big part of you, and yeah my duty shoes were stiff as a board lol, but seemed a lot softer by morning.
sage advice about gatting enough sleep, its something i was very guilty of going way too many hours without sleep after my last shift that week was finnished, but i did make apromise to myself that i needed to be less manic in my ways now, and pace myself well, i rested up before duty, and came home and went to be, and then last night got to my bed at 11 PM, i know if i dont pace myself now, at some point i ll pay the rpice, and have to be more wise with my sleep pattern, but thanks for the reminder from someone who well knows :)
I remeber as a student nurse, it wa sbrought up at collge to one of the nurse tutors, that i was too condescending to patients calling them honey and hugging the ones that i knew werent objectionable, sure there are some who wouldnt appreciate it, but thats easily sussed i thought, the nurse tutor said ...well does any of the patinets think she is condescending...my fellow student nurse said...well erm no, the tutors said well there is your anwer then.
had to love that nurse tutor lolololol.
Its too easy irish for me to say to you think of all the ppl you helped whilse you were able, i know that comfort falls way too short, but im sure youve enriched many lives in your career, and since youve been dealing with AI issues for so many years, i bet a long time before retiral came, that DID enrich your service to the many you came incontact with,id say you were still nursing reading many of your posts here, as linda is, just through a much different medium that it once was, the internet :)
Thankyou for your advice i ll guard it well

Wednesday, I have to share this little tidbit with you. I did do med surg nursing and some years of OB before I ended up in Long term care. Thought I would never do the long term care but learned so much and really loved it.
The tidbit!!! Had an Alzheimers patient one time who wandered the halls in and out of everyones rooms. She could be a little pest as she was always "moving" objects here and there. I think she thought she was cleaning. An old farm wife who had always done for others. One day she was standing in the hall crying. I went up and put my arms around here and hugged her. She generally never talked. That day she said, "I ain't got nothing or nobody". Talk about heart wrenching!!! Someone has to take care of the world's elderly and they are such a blessing to us even in their confusion. Irish ;D
\irsh
never a truer word spoken, and yes its hear wrenching at times, other times like the two ladies i ha donce, who thought they were both on a cruise ship, and kept asking me for cocktails lol, i couldnt find one of the once, i asked the other where she was, sahe said she is having he rhair done, were dining with the captain tonight lolololol, found her on the toilet , theyd never seen each other before comming to the ward, and when they were finally placed in a nursing home they were placed together, always made me feel that that way theyd never really be alone :)
