Title: Weight gain/trouble losing weight a symptom?
Post by: missy078 on March 03, 2009, 05:32:49 PM
Hello!  I was unofficially diagnosed in December and actually found that I had an autoimmune disease due to weight gain, despite eating healthy and exercising regularly.  I was hoping that it was because my body was just beginning to cope with the Sjogren's, but my bloodwork is all normal (except for positive SSA and SSB), but I'm still having a VERY hard time losing weight.  I've stopped gaining, which is a blessing, but I'm not losing.

My thyroid is 100% normal.  I am not on any meds at this time because my hubby and I want to start a family soon.  Has anyone else heard of this as a symptom?  I know it's not in my head!!

Gaining weight, not losing weight, sounds like the average American to me.  I can't lose any weight either, in-fact I thought when I added cancer to my list of medical problems I would finally lose some weight.  I mean there has to be a silver lining somewhere right?  No such luck.  My wife has the same problem and she doesn't have Sjogren's.

missy

thyroid levels being low can cause weight gain, but you stated our bloods are fine except for ssa ssb. I do know that food intolerances can cause ppl to not be able to lose weight.

few years ago i went to weight atchers stuck to it like glue and lost nothing , not a pound. I tried again, still same, now this last 2 weeks, ive went onto the dandida diet, and have at least lost inches, but that might be just bloating settling down, ive not weighed myself, but i am wearing jeans i could get into again . Still run any diet change past your doc first, i told mine yesterday who coulnt get mke out quick enough, he just said...well your feeling better for it, so keep going, but i know they fob you off in my practice, worth a thought, i posted links about this in forum in treatment section

Hi Missy  :)

I totally sympathise with you. I spent most of my life being stick thin and I now have my doc telling me to lose weight on a regular basis and I just don't seem to be able to. I find it very odd and unpleasant being the weight I am now because I guess, for most of my life, I was underweight. I used to be able to eat anything - and never gain.

T's diet sounds interesting!

Take care - Scottie  :)

Hello Missy,

Well I always used to be a sucker for weight gain too...

But after Sjogren's came around, it's a lot harder to get the excess pounds off.
For the last 6 years I've been on the Atkins Diet constantly but I get the feeling it's not working as well anymore.

The only med that really helped my Sjogren's was Plaquenil, but my weight shot up on this too.

On the other hand, loadsa people without Sjogren's are gaining too. It's the pest of the West!

Best wishes,
Maria

ok now you all got me worried....I am losing weight ....I am not on a so called diet...but just the same it is coming off....so now I am hoping that I don't have another problem.  I have always been on the heavier side except when I was in my 30's and I did a crash diet...I know I really know that is not a good thing but I did it any ways. Now I am 57 and have lost about 55 lbs since last summer and let me tell you I have always been one to look at food (not eat it) and gain weight...  My hubby (he can eat tons and not gain a pound) has retired and I told him I am not fixing food like we use to eat... no more meals with meat, potato, and veggie but he can order like that  when we go out to eat.  I can't seem to drink any kind of pop because it makes me that much dryer.  If I eat any sugar products I make sure it is before 3 pm or I will pay for it at night so usually I forget about the sweets until evening...then it is too late...  I sure hope we are just eating better and that is the reason for the weight lost.... but the strange thing is my hubby isn't losing weight.  Who knows...

Hi Carrot,

Sometimes I've read losing weight can be caused by Sjogren's too...

But 55 pounds seems like an awful lot to me... Have you checked it out at your GP's?
I think that's the first stop whenever something drastic like that happens.

(I wouldn't mind losing some bulge, but -55 would make me look like Twiggy).

Take care,
Maria
