Boy... I slept in a different bed recently and woke up with a lot less pain {no wise cracks please ;) lol )
I really need a new mattress/box spring... The one I have is only 4 years old, but it was inexpensive about $800 for both, so middle of the road.. I have turned and turned it... feels solid until the middle of the night... then it feels like I'm sleeping in a hole... It was a Serta and I won't buy one again.
I looked at them today and they are so expensive.. $1500 and up for both... Yikes !
Does anyone have any ideas ? Do you like yours ?
I'm also wondering if this isn't part of the my disease process, that my body just hurts in the middle of night and a new mattress isn't going to make a difference... Thoughts ??
SeaBreeze,
I like ours, one of those European memory foam things, that and one of those memory foam "neck higher than head" pillows have made a big difference in morning aches.
The disadvantage of most of these styles is they are only one side up so you can't flip over for more use. Also, have read since that one should "air out" these products for a few months before using as they actually give off toxic fumes when brand new.
Like you I realized after using a hotel bed how much difference a new one could make. And can verify they do.

We are thinking of getting a mattress also. We have had a solid foam (brick) mattress for about 16 yrs. and it is finally in need of replacement. (Hubby had disc surgery and it was prescribed) We will still need a pretty good firm mattress.
Our daughter has one of those Tempurpedic (sp). Costly but she wouldn't trade it for anything. I've also heard great revues for the Sleep Number mattresses. We are looking into both of these.

I have always bought the top of the line mattress and found that after a few year (even when flipping the mattress) my back would hurt.
Seven years ago we bought a Select Comfort and its the same as the day we purchased it and has helped with back pain. I can't sleep on a Tempurpedic due the the chemicals that are emits from the memory foam. I did some research on the internet and found that a lot of people have the same problem, so that's something you want to find out when considering foam.
My husband and I bought a Select Comfort several years ago and went a step further a bought the adjustable bed (where we can adjust the head and foot position). I would not go back to a regular mattress. I keep my mattress at the same setting, but my husband will change his mattress setting fairly often depending on when he prefers a soft or firm setting. The only caution I would give is that you cannot sit on your bed as it will cause the foam support to collapse, but other than that issue, I really like the mattress. We found the cost to be comparable to the better coil mattresses.
The adjustable feature was expensive, but husband cannot sleep flat on his back anymore (due to eye and breathing problems). It was worth the price to not deal with the constant adjusting of numerous pillows ending with me wanting to smother him with a few after hearing the ongoing complaints of not being quite comfortable. ::)

We bought a feather mattress to lay on top of our existing mattress and boxsprings. It is heavenly. We shake it each week to keep it fluffy.
I used to be very uncomfortable in bed, and lying there on a solid mattress would irritate my nerves. Now every part of my body is padded and I actually have mornings when I don't want to get out of bed, vs. getting out really early because I can't get comfortable.
Good luck. I hope you find a restful solution.
Amy
Thank you for the suggestions... I'm going to start my "Mattress Fund" with my income tax return...
In the meantime; someone suggested an 'eggcrate' mattress to put over the one I have... Anyone use one of those ??
I've seen these "egg crate" pads but never used them. I understand they can be uncomfortable for some people, while others swear by them. I guess it depends on the individual.
Amy, my daughter (youngest) that has fibro uses a feather bed overlay and she loves it. She said it's the only way she can get comfortable enough to sleep. Of course her idea of comfort takes about a 1/2 hour to achieve. She must have 5 pillows, 4 blankets and various other things she has to adjust to get comfortable. It's a good thing my SIL sleeps like the dead.
Take care everyone and may your nights become the best you ever had,

Ok Pooh . . this is interesting. How does Amy "look" like her feather bed? Has she grown feathers? ;D ;D ;D
Couldn't pass this one up. LOL

............ LOL ...........
Pooh was actually responding to me about my post that I bought a featherbed mattress. I don't think her daughter is named Amy, although I suppose she could be!
I think when she says her daughter looks like a featherbed it means that she can't stop the feathers from leaking and sticking to her.
OK, maybe not.
What confused me about Pooh's post is when she said it was a good thing her SIL sleeps like the dead. Given that her SIL is either her husband's sister or her brother's wife, how does her sleeping habits relate to her daughter's? I'm really confused. Maybe they share the same nest?!?
Pooh needs to post a family tree and then assure us that her daughter is not a goose and not named Amy. I think what Pooh needs is to find her own way of getting a good night sleep. Poor Pooh. :-*

P.S. I never used an eggcrate mattress but since we're being goofy about featherbeds, I feel a joke coming about eggcrates and featherbeds...
Son In Law............. (sleeping next to daughter) :)
Ha! Son-in-law. I guess because I don't have one, I never thought of it.
I've pretty much given up on my bed. I've been sleeping in an oversized recliner since having surgery to move my morphine pump in Oct. My swollen knee can't handle me sleeping on my side with a pillow between my legs, my favorite position, and I'm too sore to sleep on my back. My husband and I have talked about getting an adjustable bed when we have the funds.
I'm glad to know about the fumes from the Temperpedic, I didn't know about that and have read several of their ads.
I guess it doesn't matter a lot where I sleep as I only sleep every other night and then, not eve always that often. And I wonder why I'm tired all the time!
Thanks for all the information provided in this topic,
Tracy
