Brown urine---just noticed it. It might have been present this am but I didn't really look. I called the dr. and waiting for return call.
I started a new med, Seroquel, to help me sleep but only took it twice. It's a yellow pill. No pigment there.
I am wondering if this is hematuria from the iodine contrast medium I had on 12-8-08. Could it affect me this late in the game? I feel lousy but hey, what's new?
Thanks, Sheila
Of course you know what I'm about to say....this is something that, if it persists, should be checked by your doctor, so you've already started that process.
The yellow colour of the Seroquil comes from ferric oxide, and that may cause some discolouration. Seroquil can also cause decrease in urine output, which might appear as concentration...this is definitely a concern for the doctor. The other options that first come to mine are concentration from dehydration, which could make normally yellow urine appear brown, or changes in colour from foods like beets, which can cause darkening.
My first thought was blood. Would blood in urine cause it to be brown?
In what way do you feel lousy? Any localized pain? Any fever?
Please let us know what you find out.
Loving concern,
Janna
Yipes, Tinker, my first thought was blood too. So glad to hear that you've called your doctor. Please let us know what you find out.

Thanks so much for all of your input. Yes, this frightened me....I've never had dark brown urine before. Even diluted in the bowl, it's still dark brown!
So, the dr. on call returned my call in about 2 hrs. She didn't think it was due to the iodine contrast I had on 12-8 but didn't know for sure. She DID think it could be related to the polymyositis (muscle death can show up as dark brown urine.) She told me to take the 10mg of prednisone as the PA gave me on Friday.
I think that is a really stupid thing to do. The steroids can mask fever, infection, blood test results... not very good advice. And the companion med, prilosec, to protect my stomach, was $150 or close to that, so I have to get a replacement RX.
I've been peeing in a cup since that first brown flag and it's been pale yellow and normal looking. Temp 97.5 degrees. My kidneys feel a bit tender but that could be nothing. Since I am taking hydrocodone, I had been putting it off to see if I ran fever or had kidney or liver pain. But had to take it at 5 pm or have withdrawal symptoms. So, the pain in the kidneys is less and the temp may be lowered due to the acetaminophen. Just don't know.
With the googling, I found that dark brown urine can be intermittent....so I still need to go to the doctor.
Also, possible causes are rhamdymyositis (I know I spelled that wrong), liver, gallbladder, kidney problems or trauma, meds, or foods eaten with pigment.
The on-call dr. wasn't any help. So, I'll see my urologist/neuro/rheummie?? tomorrow. It will depend on who will see me.
The thought of ending up in the ER is absolutely nauseating. UGH! Thanks for your input and concern. I'll keep you posted. :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
Hi Tinker... For what its' worth, I take seroquel and I've never had dark urine. Good luck with everything.. at least tomorrow is Monday and it will be easier to speak to the doctors....
