Title: Smoking?
Post by: Chico on November 09, 2008, 03:30:46 PM
Found this on a website while researching mouth sores.

The unbelievable part:
" Studies have shown that resumption of smoking after cessation caused pre-existing ulcers to heal within a few days. Also, nicotine gum has been shown to cause ulcer healing and prevention when taken for 1 month, with relapse upon discontinuation of the gum."
Look under RAS heading:

Otherwise, found site a help see bad food listed above the smoking advice.

Hmmmmmm... I tend to treat a lot of what I find on line with caution and I reckon resumption of smoking is one of those things!

Take care - Scottie  :)

Hi again  :)

OK - I've been googling. I've found that smokers planning to give up should be warned about mouth ulcers as a possible side effect of quitting because tobacco smoke has a certain anti-bacterial action. However - the ulcers/cankers are meant to be short lived and it suggests a visit to the GP if they persist.

There is also quite a bit about smoking related oral cancers starting out like ulcers.

I didn't actually come across the advice to resume smoking - but I can see why somebody came to that conscusion.

Smoking isn't good for dry mouth, eyes, lungs and general inflammation.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Agree, you must watch what advice you find and follow on the Internet. But like this ill advised but well meant tidbit it sure makes life interesting. What did we do in the good old days?
