Title: Do you overcompensate?
Post by: beverley on September 27, 2008, 03:17:50 AM
It's just a thought after looking at all the occupations that people hold who suffer with Sjs and other ailments (Social Forum - What do you do for a living?), and it occurred to me that everyone works really hard and achieves a great deal.  Do you think because of the long periods of fatigue, pain and feeling foggy and useless we actually end up pushing too hard when we're well or partially well?  I'm beginning to think I do, and if we do is it 'grabbing life by the ...' or is it foolhardy because we aggravate the condition?

Hi Beverley,
Good question.  With me I think I just get to the point where I can't stand something anymore, dust, clutter, etc., and no matter how I feel I push to clear it up.  I also think it's a lifetime of instilled habits that take over when we are feeling good.

I don't think we overdo so much, as do what we use to do and thought nothing of it.  Whereas, now everything little thing we do, we notice.  It's sort of a no win situation.

I hope this makes sense, I haven't finished my coffee yet. :D

Take care,

Pooh

Hi Beverly,

I'm with Pooh, I also find that I do what I have to do no matter how bad I feel, and a life time of habits is right (I often swear I function on auto pilot!).

"I don't think we overdo so much, as do what we use to do and thought nothing of it.  Whereas, now everything little thing we do, we notice.  It's sort of a no win situation."   Very well put Pooh and you make a lot of sense even without a fill up! :D

Take care -

Patze

G,day Beverly, no I don't think its fool hardy to push.  That's just human nature.  Sure there are times I want to roll over and give up.  But God has given us that vital spark to persaver.  Sometimes that spark almost is extinguished.  But just by taking that extra step that spark can turn into a flame of bright light that shines on others.

Others are watching us.  Our examples when we are faced with adversity help others face their own trials and temptations.  They won't quit because we won't quit.  we draw strength from one another.

Yes sometimes we push too hard and our condition fights back.  We want to give up.  Then we think of some one like pooh maybe.  How she continues on.  Always having word of encouragement.  You may then say to yourself "If she can do it why can't I"  Later you may meet and encourage some one else by word or example.  It go's on and on.

Do we push to hard sometimes?  Yes, we do.  We have a vital spark reflects on others.  Even by doing the little things great good can happen because we push.

I tend to agree with everyone. It seems we push too hard and probably for us with sjoggies we are for what our bodies are already going thorugh but in the 'normal' world we are just doing what wveryone else does. We just feel it more. I know there are times when i just don't want to face the world and i give in to it a bit. But then i get sick of myself and just get up and go and will keep going until i almost fall over.
My partner commented last night that i was running around al over the house doing this and that and whatever. My answer was that i was feeling good so im taking advantage of it to get things done cause i didn't know how i would wake up this morning.

But like seeker said. its like a pay it forward here. You read someones post especially if you're feeling a bit low and you think wow if they are going through that and can keep going then so can i. You feel inspired. The you read another post and hear about someone who is a bit under the weather and because you have been inspired by the last post you think i will give them a bit of a leg up and so on. it makes you feel good. When you feel good on the inside it shows on the outside.

That's what i love about this family

Hi Beverley   :)

Since all this started I reckon I've made a point of taking chances when they occur because I feel as thoug I never know what's round the next corner, so I want to do what I can when I can and hope to continue!

I pace myself and try very hard not to do stuff that I dislike e.g. housework!!

By chances I mean ... um .... several stage performances alongside professionals looking for community input - being part of a bamboo orchestra at a local festival thing - going off on a canal boat for a week - things I might have passed on a few years ago.

I think I'm aiming to have as much fun as I can before I come to a grinding halt!!  :)

Take care - Scottie  :)

Thanks everybody.  I'm with you because I tend to go at maximum velocity whilst I am well, but when you have responsibilities, is it responsible to put more strain on yourself than you can realistically handle?  Are we limited not by our abilities, but by the needs of others and our duty to meet them?
