Hi there, autoimmune disease can cause hair loss in some people, whether they're stressed or not. When I was in my late 30's I lost about half the volume of my hair, which was terribly scary and stressful  :( It was a year or so before I was 'officially' diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (but I'd had it for many years before that). It was diffuse hair loss (even amount of hair loss from all over my head). Now I have 2 rows of hair extensions and nobody can tell. I saw a specialist and was able to get a government grant towards the extentions. Since than I've had no more hair loss, just the usual amount.

A girlfriend of mine (37) who has Sjogrens and Lupus, goes through periods of hair loss as well. It seems random with her as well, whether she's stressed or not. We often talk about it as her husband has made comments about finding lots of hair in the shower :( It's really stressful for a woman to loose lots of hair, so I know how you feel.

Take care, Lesley (New Zealand)

Hi Denise,
I go through periods of hair loss and it freaks me out, but I still have a bit to take care of.  No bald spots, just thinner than it use to be.  My rheumy told me that this will happen with AI diseases and not to worry.  Well, easier said than done, I still worry about it.

I hope you find less and less hair in your comb and brush.  The fewer I find, the happier I am. ;D

Hugs, Pooh

Hi Denise,

I sure can empathize with you. My Rheumatologists thinks my hairloss is from the Methotextrate I take, but who knows for sure. I clean up a handful of hair with every hair wash. Fortunately I started with extremely thick hair. Now my hair is more average.  I do not see a relationship with flares.

I understand how you feel. I almost wish hats would become fashionable again!

Hi Denise, I've lost so much hair that I wear wigs. If you want information on wigs or hair pieces (toppers/toupees), just send me a message and I'd be happy to help you. It is devastating, even to lose a small amount of hair since our sense of self encorporates what we see in the mirror every day. (((HUGS)))

Hi Denise  :)

I suffered thinning hair when my thyroid went underactive. Thinning hair and loss of hair on the outside of the eyebrow are both possibly caused by hypothyroidism. It's one of the symptoms anyway.

My hairdresser told me to take a zinc supplement everyday as it helps thinning hair.

My hair's gone back to normal but I couldn't say whether it's the zinc - or the thyroxine so I plan to keep on taking both!

Take care - Scottie  :)

Yeah, I've lost about 1/3 of my hair.  I also had real thick hair to begin with.  There is still enough but I DO NOT WANT TO LOSE ANY MORE!

To tell you the truth, I think I've grown some back since starting Plaquenil (almost 4 months ago).

Thanks all for the replies.

I don't feel so "freakish" now. I have gotten so I almost need to wear a hairnet when I eat. I will try the zinc. I really wish that I could take Plaqunil.

Hi Denise,

I too lost a lot of my hair; it was always thin, but I had a ton of it - then the thyroid went on strike.  Well, I've had to cut it all off to try to cover the thinning areas - embarrassing; now I know what guys feel like when they do the comb over (no offense guys).

You are not freakish at all, the hair loss seems to be common with several different autoimmune problems.  Hopefully your flare will end soon and the hair will make a comeback.

Take care -

Patze
