Title: Travel Insurance
Post by: Bonnie on July 21, 2008, 08:38:32 AM
Hi everyone,

This summer I have booked a holiday, this will be my first holiday since DX.  Does anyone have any tips about travel insurance?  I have been looking at a few companies (the ones I have used before I had the DX)  all of them say that you if you are awaiting a hospital appointment you must call them and can't get insured on line.  I have not called yet as I was not sure what to say about SJS.  Any ideas, what do you guys do?

???

Bonnie, my travel insurance is built into my health insurance, so I don't have to bother with it, but you should be aware of one thing. Most travel insurance policies won't cover any claim that arises from a pre-existing condition, or one for which you have been treated actively in a period of time that the insurance company sets. The exact restrictions vary from company to company, but be sure you ask about their policy.

You have a responsibility to disclose any conditions, both diagnosed or in the process, because failure to do so could result in voiding the policy if you claim treatment and they determine that you were aware of the condition prior to your trip.

Travel insurance is still a very good idea, in the event of acute illness or accident.

Hi Bonnie,
How great that you get to go on holiday.  It's been so long since we went any where, I'd probably forget how to get home again. :D

In answer to your question on travel insurance, is it just the medical that you are concerned with or personal injury or lost or theft of your belongings, or all of the above?  The reason I ask is you might want to check your existing insurance for this type of coverage.  For instance, our medical insurance pays for out of state or out of country events.  Our home owners insurance covers our personal injury or loss of personal belongings or theft of.

So before purchasing more that you might not need, check out what you already have.  When I went to Scotland several years ago (8) I didn't need any insurance at all.

It's been a few years since I've checked (have business travel insurance now), but most of the insurers that I had experience with  covered pre-existing conditions if one insures within a week of booking their trip.

We go to some isolated islands and I am mostly concerned with medical evacuations (US$50,000 is commonplace) and health coverage (most countries require cash even if you have health insurance back home): You pay first and get reimbursed by your insurer. But by using a travel insurance company, they will post a bond should you need medical assistance, relieving you of the cash requirements.

A good place to check on the costs from various insurers is:

insuremytrip.com

You'll get dozens of immediate on-line quotes and you can compare and choose which ones offer the coverage that you need.

Have a wonderful, safe holiday ! :)

Hi Bonnie  :)

I booked travel insurance through a company online called travebility ot travelbility (can't remember) but it was the one that gave me the best quote on pre-existing conditions

Take care - Scottie  :)
