Title: what causes the nausea
Post by: Skylar on June 10, 2008, 05:22:37 AM
Since all this dryness started, I've experience a lot of nausea - sometimes so bad it keeps me awake at night or interferes with other activities. It comes and goes and I can't figure out any pattern. Does anyone here experience nausea with SjS? What could the cause be? Some of my ideas have been I'm drinking too much water throwing off my electrolytes or I'm missing something in my digestive tract due to SjS that maybe acts as a lubricant or I just don't know what. Any suggestions?

Skylar,
I have the nausea too.  I believe mine is related from the autonomic neuropathy I have that affects my GI system.  Some days my tremor is worse and that also affects it.  And it does come and go.  Yesterday I couldn't eat lunch or breakfast withoug feeling barfy.  Dinner was fine.  Go figure.

Hi Skylar  :)

Sometimes our medications can cause nausea too. I can't remember what you're on but be careful to take things either with or without food, depending what they say and alsways look for possible side effects. If you may be having any - discuss it with your doctor.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Billye, OMG I hope it's not neuropathy in the GI tract, I have enough neuropathies in my legs and arms from I presume the SjS unless you can get it from ME.

Scottie, I'm not on any rheumy type meds yet and my regular meds haven't changed in a few years, althought that's not to say that someone you take can't all of a sudden cause problems.

I will be discussing this at my next rheumy appt. DH and I talked about it and concur that I don't want to take any medications for nausea itself, rather I want to get to the reason for it and treat that problem.

Billye, do you do anything for your nausea or just suffer in silence?

Hi Skylar  :)

I totally agree with you. I'd hate to take meds for anything unless I knew what was causing the problem that I was taking them for. Hope you find out soon.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Skylar,
I won't say I suffer in silence... ;D  But I don't take anything for it.  Sometimes I'll sip gingerale.  It's usually a good excuse for me not to eat.  I could stand to lose some weight anyway.

Be sure to tell your doctor about your symptoms.

Hi Billye, I've done some more research and I have to agree with what you first posted, it probably is neuropathy - either with the GI or autonomic system because I have several other symptoms that fall under both of these umbrellas. You're right, I will tell my rheumy.

I could stand to lose weight, but I actually find eating something helps with the nausea temporarily LOL.

It is very possible to be from neuropathy, but I also think that it just comes with the territory as many autoimmune diseases will list nausea. Many times when the body is under stress nausea can be a by-product. Obviously, those of us with sjogrens are always under stress with the autoimmune attack on our body. Our bodies immune system is revved up.

I have had it really bad also, but I suffer from a very rare condition. It is the ability to eat no matter how bad I feel. There have been times that I have food aversions etc. but seldom that I can't eat. It helps a lot to eat gingersnap cookies as the ginger is a natural product that helps nausea. Also, drinking 7 up with the gingersnaps helps.

For many years I would get up around 4-6AM and have to get gingersnaps and 7-up in order to settle my stomach before I ever got up for the day to get ready for work. I have also found that Pepsi and soda crackers settle my stomach. Hopefully you will get some help from your doctor. I never asked for a medication for the nausea as it came and went and still does.
